There are at least seven words to describe how I feel right now.

I know everyone remembers Carlin for his famous "seven words" routine but as a kid I stumbled upon his first album "Take-offs and Put-Ons" - which is some of his original "clean" material. I practically memorized this and "FM & AM" as a kid and can remember some of those bits by heart even today. I remember Carlin's comedy affectionately - what a funny guy.

There's a ton of old Carlin stuff on YouTube. Here's just one bit, a newscast, from "Take-Offs and Put-Ons":

This includes an early version of Al Sleet, the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman.

I'm stunned. My all-time favorite comic. The personification of the thinking man's comic, the man was absolutely a genius.

I have Occupation: Foole on vinyl. Now if I could find something to play it on ... wow. That is truly sad.

"I was Irish Catholic, until I reached the age of reason ... "

I can't think of a day going by in a long time where I haven't thought or said a Carlinism.

Wow.

The Keith Richards of comedy has died. I'm gonna miss him.

Here's a quote:

"Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money."

I watched some of his work last night. Really going to miss this guy.

Brianl has it exactly right, the thinking man's comic!

Here is the thing about Carlin. With some people he could both offend and make bust up laugh in the same routine. He could do it just as well clean or dirty. I will always enjoy his many cameo roles in various movies.

I propose the FCC lift all indecency sanctions for a 24hr period to allow broadcasters to tribute a truly significant person in American culture. Only though if it is indeed original George Carlin material. Imagine that shit.

I Love(d) George, I listen to him daily, but it's the polar opposite of his well-known material.

He narrates "Thomas the Tank" episodes, alternating with Alec Baldwin. We spend 30 minutes with Thomas pre-nap or bedtime. I will miss him greatly! So will Baby M.

Loved him since the first time I saw him, which I believe was on "The Jimmy Dean Show". Yes, the sausage guy.

My favorite: Carlin on "Stuff". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvgN5gCuLac

To be honest, I don't follow comics much anymore. I find the young breed of comics far too over the top. Nothing like those who would appear on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson". Those were the days.

George Carlin -- RIP.

I think Chris Rock is pretty good.

Guess my next favorite now is gonna have to be Lewis Black. Wish his show was better though. It's not quite working for me.

Shyguy, that's one hell of an idea!

BTW: Tits can be heard on TV! Some movies let it pass now. One of the most memorable scenes for me was that one Harrison Ford did in "Clear and Present Danger". They are looking at the sat images and he points to the screen and says, "tits".

Perfect use too. Don't think the scene would work without that.

Carlin was my man. He told people the truth about themselves and went after these holier than art thous. The comic world is truly poorer.

I had a college class on Linguistics and the teacher played Carlin's famous "seven dirty words" one evening. Outside one adult who was in the class who had a cow, the rest of us had a wonderful discussion on semantics and wordsmiths.

Probably one of my favorite classes I took at my 4 yr Christian Liberal Arts College.

George Carlin was more than a funny man. I believe that he was a brilliant philosopher and keen social observer. Our country was a better place under his wry microscope. I hope that other comics take his lead and consider speaking truth to power as one of their most solemn duties.

I think there are still a few comedians with that touch. Never Scared took large chestnuts for Chris Rock to do, and it was a watershed moment. I also greatly admire Bill Maher for his commentary on our lives. Simply being angry or vulgar is pointless when one can get people to think.

Bill Maher and Dennis Miller: Do they really qualify as comics anymore?

Yes Chris Rock's stand-up is good but my favorite comic is without a doubt Doug Stanhope. Another great "act" which I guess is somewhat comedy is Richard Cheese. And finally when it comes to local comedians no one is funnier than Lonnie Bruhn. Whatever happened to Dat Phan? No really. Yeah that was my lame attempt at a joke.

"But God's free gift is life that lasts forever."

I've a hunch its BS. But luckily for you, I won't be able to wake a very disappointed you up from dirt nap and tell you "told you so." Heaven is the here and now.

Since we're steering off topic a bit, let me just say Eddie Izzard is the comic of this era.

George Carlin was the first comedian who really got my attention. My Mom has all the old Bill Cosby albums that I had memorized by the age of 10, but Cos was her comedian.

Geoge Carlin was mine.

I believe Hbo will be running All of George Carlins specials <the one of interest to portlanders should be the one from The Beacon theater,As Carlin bids goodbye the camera follows him backstage where he grabs a jacket from a chair and as he exits the backstage door he puts jacket on ,as camera zooms in, the back of his jacket reads..........................................................92.3 KGON
