How many cd's do you own? What does your cd collection consist of? Is there any cd's that you own, that would embarrass the hell out of you if the PDX radio community knew you owned.
What was the last Cd you purchased??

Ok Freeze, its time to admit to the world that you still listen to Brittney Spears. Come clean on PDX radio and let the world know about your cd collection. And Merkin was that an autographed copy of "treetop flyer" you were telling me about.?

I'll start, I own probably around a thousand cd's. I like everything from rock to Bluegrass( Yes I do own a copy of David Lee Roth's Bluegrass album "strummin with the Devil". He covers all Van Halen songs, Bluegrass style. Its actually not that bad. I also own every single ACDC album up to "Razors Edge", everything after "Razors edge" is crap. I own every single Rollin stones albums up to "Tattoo You" becuase everything after "Tattoo You" is crap. I also own a lot of classic country like Johnny Cash, Meryl Haggard, Waylon Jennings ect. I own all Van Halen and Van Hagar albums except for Van Halen 3- which is crap.
Ok enough about My Cd Collection, lets hear about your cd collection!

How many cd's do you own?

1300 +- 50 (all purchased, no "complimentary" crap from radio)

What does your cd collection consist of?

Oldest: Robert Johnson 1937 then a big jump to the 50's
to early Miles Davis, Ricky Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Mose Allison ...

60s: tons of rock, r&b, pop, some jazz, folk, acoustic rock
(almost complete Beatles on CD, complete Simon & Garfunkel, decent Beach Boys stuff, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, complete Doors, Electric Flag, John Mayall/Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac, Paul Butterfield, Spencer Davis, Billy Joel, Blues Project, Jethro Tull, Vanilla Fudge, Young Rascals, Savoy Brown, Traffic, Rolling Stones, The Band, Strawbs, Moody Blues, The Pretty Things, Creedence Clearwater Revival, BST, Chicago, James Gang, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Steve Miller, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Pink Floyd, ELP, Santana, Spirit and many many more.

70's: More of the same plus the influx of British bands like Status Quo, Stray, Hawkwind, Clear Blue Sky, ... Aeromsmith, Allman Brothers to Tom Petty to King Crimson to ZZ Topp ... just way too many to list ... jazz jazz/rock early ambient, a ton of Zappa ... ... ... Kevin Ayres ...

80's: More of the same plus 80's bands like U2, Joe Satriani, Sting, Little Feat, John Mellencamp, etc. etc.

90's: More of the same plus ... Sonny Landreth, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, hey I don't have time for this.

2000's: Sunset Valley, Love Spit Love, Rose Hill Drive, Jimmy Thackery, etc. etc.

Roughly, the breakdown is: +-5%

Rock and Hard Rock 60%
Blues and Country Rock 15%
R & B 7.5%
Jazz 5%
Alternative 7.5%
Misc 5%

Is there any cd's that you own, that would embarrass the hell out of you if the PDX radio community knew you owned?

None. Some are weak within the artist's catalogue, but I rarely buy totally unknown bands without hearing them myself and when I do if they suck, I turn it back in and immediately forget their name. Some artists early works can be kinda rough in comparison to later releases, but hardly "embarrassing."

What was the last Cd you purchased?

6/15 Purchased Nine Lives by Steve Winwood, Flavors of Entanglement by Alanis Morisette, The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings by Styx (Styx, Styx II, The Serpent Is Rising, Man Of Miracles), Same Old Man by John Hiatt

"How many cd's do you own?"

Not sure.. I haven't seen most of them in years.

Seriously, at this point it's easier to download something I want to hear (even if I already own it) rather than find the CD, rip it, deal with the inevitable track that won't rip due to a scratch, etc etc etc.

I used to. But once you have a kid...

I had to go to 2 WartMals to buy the new (sold-out twice) Journey CD.

(It almost killed me. I barely got out alive.)

Mrs Merkin that is a word that needs to become part of the Websters dictionary. Absolutely genius: WartMals.

I am proud to say that I have only ever stepped into WartMals twice in my lifetime.

Approx. 1K CDs.

50% - New age (yes, half are complimentary radio copies, but I toss the crap)
25% - 90's alternative rock
25% - 60, 70, 80, 00's

"Embarrassing CDs": I would say The Monkees and A Flock of Seagulls, but you know what, they're both great and I don't care what people think.

I'm too lazy to count my CDs and don't really want to give too much info on a public board.

Most embarrassing: probably Nancy Sinatra's 1998 release that includes her versions of "Like a Rolling Stone," and the Temptations/Rare Earth classic, "Get Ready." I paid $2.99 for this dreck from a blowout sale when the DCC label went out of business.

Most recent: a Mojo Magazine CD compilation found still sealed at Goodwill for $2.99. Mojo often puts out some great discs that are included with their magazines, but this one turned out to be sort of an embarrassment too. It's all cover versions of songs from the Beatles Revolver album by British Alt. groups nobody has ever heard of, many of which are almost as bad as Nancy Sinatra.

Coupla hundred tops.

CD's for me, come and go. I get 'em used, sometimes buy new, trade, lose them. I've got way more vinyl than CD. A good friend and I trade the vinyl collection, over time. Depends on who is really into it, and who has the space! Right now, he does. Whoever has it, will just rip tracks for the other one, and pool new finds when we get together.

Most embarrasing: Madonna - "Immaculate Collection", Milli Vanilli - Both very well produced and speak well to the era. Both of these have a coupla tracks that I listen to regularly.

A lot of my music has been digitized from the vinyl, and ripped from the CD. It's on portable disks, and I tap it from time to time, in phases when moods change.

Probably should add "Extensions" - Manhattan Transfer to the embarrasing list, along with some show tunes sound tracks. I've got "Extensions" on both CD and two copies of vinyl. I love well done vocal music, and that album is a treat each time I listen.

"Foreign Affair", "Birdland", and "Body and Soul" are my favorites from that album.

The classic show tunes are from various broadway performances as well as the Rogers and Hammerstien (sp?) stuff. As a younger person, I spent my fair amount of time on stage, and just love the music that surrounds that.

Three groups that are always in the playlist are: SAGA - "Worlds Apart", RUSK - Various, and the FIXX, various cuts as well.

I used to build bigger collections, but have somehow gotten into a groove where I keep a few well known things and just let the rest happen. Sometimes I buy, trade, download, listen live, radio, etc...

What tends to happen is that I'll rediscover things over time, hearing it, then getting obsessed, then it will pass at which point I don't really care if I have an archive copy or not.

That only applies to CD's and digital media though. Vinyl is valuable in a different way. Once acquired, it goes into the collection and that's that.

Oh yeah, P.M. Dawn goes in the embarrasing stack as well. I love the guy for the simple fact that he actually does musical loops. It's not just sounds, but well composed musical elements, looped and performed in the style of most HIP-HOP.

We may well find he was somewhat ahead of his time, like Milli Vanilli was. His stuff is very well produced also.

The track "Beautiful" is a treat, IMHO.

Hey Missing_KSKD
Milli Vanilli "Girl you know its true" was an Awesome album, and still sounds very good today. it was a very well produced album and the songs are so catchy.

The "Girl you know its true" cd is actually worth around 40 dollars used, and if its brand new your looking at 60 dollars EASILY! The cd is out of print, so if you have it, it is considered a collecters item.

Pm Dawn- boy does that bring back memories. Pm Dawn were cool but they were one of the first few rappers(If you even call them rappers) to use sampeling in their music.

Pm Dawn- "Set a drift on memory bliss"- sampled the 80's song "Tue" by Spandau Ballet".

Pm Dawn's other big hit was "Looking through Patient Eyes" and that song sampled "father figure" By George michael.
That being said, Pm Dawn were still a great group. heck, I think i lost my virginity to "Looking through Patient eyes" by Pm Dawn. - Good stuff!

I think I'll watch the music video to "Looking through patient eyes" On Youtube.

WOW!!

I had no idea of the worth. You are right too. When I tune car stereos, that's the album I use. The production values are excellent, and the different musical elements are so very clearly differentiated too. Makes balancing the sound a treat!

I use -40Db ear plugs, then balance the system so that max volume on that album is just under distortion levels. Then I back off a bit more, to account for the over-processed and clipped stuff produced today, and it's golden.

From there, pull the plugs, turn it down, then balance the volume levels lower some for mid-range speakers, if the system has them. That's largely for imaging and overall response in the car. Most people don't like to push those sounds, so they are best attenuated some.

The max volume test is done with EQ flat and bass / mid / treble controls flat, then adjustments only down are done on the EQ, leaving some headroom for people to bend the EQ to their particular hearing curve.

"Set adrift on memory bliss" is an excellent tune, and that brings me to another embarassment!

Spandau Ballet and ABC! Love them both! ABC, in particular, is just so bold, in your face 80's, it's not even funny!

Love the track, "When Smokey Sings". It's perfectly done.

SB and ABC? Nothing to be embarrassed about there, as they were 2 of the many bands that made the early to mid 80's a great period for music, and for listening to the radio.

Well good then. I'll take 'em off the list and be done with it. Hey, it's PDXRadio therapy. Cheap, entertaining and effective.

I've got around 1300 cd's right now. I buy a few (mostly used) every couple of weeks. They are all shelved, in alphabetical order by artist, left to right oldest to newest. Yes I'm kind of anal about it. All kinds of music of course, mostly rock and alt-country/americana/whatever they call it now.

Last ones bought? New Sloan, new Death Cab For Cutie.

How IS that new Sloan? I heard a cut from Sloan on KNRK the other day that I did not recognize. I wondered about a new album being out - but thought it could also have been an older album cut.

God those guys are good.

And Warner, are you a Redd Kross fan at all? Great power pop. What about Shudder to Think? They aren't power pop, but have announced a reunion tour that I will be trekking to San Francisco to see at The Fillmore. ( My wife can go see Madonna in Oakland that night - I will take Shudder To Think in the city...and never our paths shall cross ).

Chicken, the new Sloan is really, really good! Tight, consistent songs across the board. I would rank it up with thier very best, nay, it might be thier best. Really.

Redd Kross I've got, they were great too.

Shudder To Think unfortunately was a bit too intense for me. That's actually one CD I have in my "reuse the jewel case for another CD when needed" box.

I am a power pop fan, that' for sure. That could be a whole 'nother thread.

Probably 2-3 hundred CD's and lots of downloads... At least half of that total is "Trad-jazz" (Ragtime to swing eras, no bebop or later "styles"!).

Most of the rest is theatre pipe organ, and the remainder is New Age, country, classical... NO rock n' roll!

*much riotous laughing* Oh, that is WAY too funny!!! that just made my day.

Alright, um, let me try and answer the original question:

this is embarrassing, but I have probably about 3500 CDs.

Jazz, blues, classical and a whole lot of rock. Some folky stuff. Some old country stuff.

Hey Andy Brown - I really like Sonny Landreth - I have South of I-10 and Levee Town. Saw him when he was the guitarist for John Hiatt a couple of years ago at the Aladdin, I think. John Eddie opened up.

Sonny is a great guitarist.

That's a lot of CD's!!

Would take about 3 man years to rip them all, and another nice chunk of a man year to encode.

Imagine when it's all done, the resulting data would fit on one portable quarter terrabyte (250GB) portable disk!
