Oprah's got herself into a real powder keg with this. It's a no win situation that could bring her show down:

"In recent months, Southern Baptist newspaper editors also have written editorials declaring "It's time for Christians to 'just say no' to the big 'O'" and calling her a source of "foolish twitter and twaddle." And Charisma, a prominent charismatic and Pentecostal magazine, ran a story in its July issue with the headline "Oprah's Strange New Gospel.'"

Wow. I just realized that haven't watched Oprah in about 5 years...when I was really sick for a few days.

But, ok. Good to know, I guess. I kind of dismissed her after her " gift " to all of us. ( Some film. I think it was bad. I recall watching it and not liking it. )

Whatever. Just another person's perspective that I didn't relate to. No big deal. I did that like 4 times today. 2 times I did relate though. Good day.

I very rarely watch "Oprah", but my goodness, this is exactly why I find the behavior of some evangelicals so puzzling. I'm sure they're pissed because Oprah has endorsed Barack Obama as president. And the last thing many of these evangelicals want is an African-American president. They live in perverted universe where white men rule and woman play a subordinate role. Why don't they channel some of their hatred into something positive, like being part of the solution, not the problem. When I see the label evangelical, I instantly think bigot -- and once again, these evangelicals are proving me right.

"Some evangelical Christians have voiced alarm that Winfrey is introducing the 46 million viewers who watch her each week to nontraditional spirituality they don't condone.

...In a first-of-its-kind venture, the evangelical newspapers hired Colorado writer and editor Steve Rabey to write the story..."

"Our point is we want our readers to be aware that what she is teaching does not represent traditional, historical Christianity, according to the Scriptures," said Keener, who also is president of the Evangelical Press Association."

Oh, the HORROR!

I don't care for Oprah at all, for many other reasons, but all I can say to this is "Oh, brother".

Much ado about nothing.

Are these the viewers complaining about her and Eckart Tolle who are also watching the shows on "The Pregnant (wo)Man" and all the other gossipy, celebrity ass-kissing, lurid, "un-christian" topics and people she deals with on a daily basis?

Gimme a break.

"Part of the evangelicals' concern stems from Winfrey's recent embrace of Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth as the first spiritual book she included in her hugely popular book club."

I feel that reading and following Eckhart Tolle's ideas are no impediment to Christianity. Good Lord, "The Power of Now" has been a best seller since 1999.

"Eckhart Tolle is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Power of Now (translated into 33 languages) and the highly acclaimed follow-up A New Earth, which are widely regarded as two of the most influential spiritual books of our time.

Eckhart’s profound yet simple teachings have already helped countless people throughout the world find inner peace and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of the teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that he sees as the next step in human evolution. An essential aspect of this awakening consists in transcending our ego-based state of consciousness. This is a prerequisite not only for personal happiness but also for the ending of violent conflict endemic on our planet."
Part of the evangelicals' concern stems from Winfrey's recent embrace of Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth as the first spiritual book she included in her hugely popular book club.

Here's another USA Today article from a few months ago fawning over Oprah and Tolle:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2008-03-02-oprah-tolle_n.htm

It's funny that people (Christians!) are now making money (filthy lucre!) by writing books and articles opposing Tolle.

And Oprah says "Spirit to me is the essence of who we are," she said. "That essence doesn't require any particular belief. It just is."

"Oprah was raised Baptist and has stated many, many times that she is a Christian and that she believes in only one God," said the spokesman, who asked not to be named. "She has also said, 'I'm a free-thinking Christian who believes in my way, but I don't believe it's the only way, with 6 billion people on the planet.'"

The spokesman noted Winfrey is hardly alone; 70% of Americans said "many religions can lead to eternal life" in a recent survey from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life."

I think Oprah's way over-rated, but this is just another stupid stunt by "The Evangelicals" who give every other Christian a bad name and a black eye.

I'm sure these are the same men who hate having "their women" buying and reading "O" magazine, but love it when the Mrs. leaves it in the bathroom, because they're looking at the bra, undie, and bikini ads and sex articles while sitting on the throne and probably making themselves go blind.

I am going to check out this author guy named Eckhart Tolle. Its sounds as if he might really be on to something. And Oprah sucks. She has never been better than who she took over for in Phil Donahue and her heiress apparent needs to take over the reigns of afternoon talk already in Racheal Ray.
