Let's hear predictions on who will be chosen.

While I don't think it will be Hillary nor do I want her to be on the ticket, there's still a part of me that says she adds more strength to the ticket than any other possible VP candidate.

I'm thinking Bill Richardson, Tim Kaine or Evan Bayh would be a good match.

The Clintons lately haven't exactly been effusive in their praise for Obama. While supposedly supporting him publicly (Hillary even had a rally for him in Nevada last week), their actual words don't seem like those of genuine support. They seem extremely carefully chosen and nuanced, as if they aren't ready to embrace him yet but know they need to sound positive about him in public to save face.

So I can't think of a better way to get both Clintons on board than to pick her as VP.

But I too doubt it will be Hillary. There are problems with the other choices as well.

Richardson means a radical new ticket for Middle America to accept. Two non-white people on the ticket? Not to be racist, but I think Obama desperately needs votes from Middle America to win. A Bayh or Kaine is a much better fit in that regard. Bayh is also very experienced in foreign affairs, but he was also a strong supporter of the Iraq war, which seems like an odd choice for a running mate given Obama's claim that he opposed Iraq all along. So Obama can't really criticize McCain for Iraq if his own running mate was just as hawkish.

Kaine is not much more experienced in national affairs than Obama, but politically he is a great choice.

The only issue with Bayh is that his Senate seat would be replaced with a Republican.

Richardson would be great.....background being in Clinton's cabinet and Governor experience too...and very solid....not a limelight stealer. Hispanic aspect doesn't hurt either.

Adding Bill Richardson to the ticket would make who I am voting for even more of a slam-dunk. It's a pick that would make a LOT of sense:

-Obviously, it would help draw Hispanic votes to the ticket.
-It might help Obama in the Southwest, where McCain is obviously going to be solid.
-Richardson would be an excellent person to have on the team as far as foreign policy and the inner workings of the White House. The transition would be a lot more seamless for Obama.
-Richardson would probably help draw more of the moderate votes that might otherwise swing to the McCain camp, he would be a good balance for Obama, who is much more liberal.
-Unlike John Edwards and Hillary Clinton and others, Richardson's integrity won't be dragged through the mud. Unquestionable character here.

This would be my short list of those to vet out:

Joe Biden
Bill Richardson
Tim Kaine
Hillary Clinton (she wouldn't except however)
Wesley Clarke
Gen. Colin Powell (so what if he's a republican)
and just because were Oregonians
Ron Wyden

I would be thrilled if Wyden is nominated, but I just don't see it happening. He's not a national figure, and Oregon is not on the map in terms of national politics. And Oregon is already a blue state so it does nothing to help Obama.

Anyway, I saw Wyden on NW 21st avenue the other night, getting into his car; I made eye contact and he waved to me, so I waved back. He never mentioned the VP thing to me, although I admit I didn't have a chance to ask...

Tom Daschle, the Senate minority leader who couldn't even hold his own Senate seat? Not a chance in hell. You don't want a guy who lost a huge election only four years ago dragging down your ticket.

Joe Biden is my guess. The youthful Obama needs a wiseman, an establishment White Guy with credentials, to balance his ticket. Biden may put his foot in his mouth every once in a while, but he's a really sharp guy who knows all the people McCain knows and more. Biden sounds like a down-to-earth guy you could easily imagine stepping into the presidency. Look at Biden in the Cheney-Bush model, in some sense.

Perhaps it will be someone named Fraud. So the Ticket would be "Obama/Fraud."
This would work well if McCain chooses someone named Treason, so that reads "McCain/Treason!"

BTW, this website gives many of the other choices beyond the "big box candidates" (no I didn't vote for Mary Starrett in the 2006 Oregon Gubernatorial Election, but I like that saying):

Politico is reporting that Hillary wasn't even vetted. Ouch! I didn't think there was that much bad blood between the two. Infact I had thought that it was more of a one sided thing with Hillary's supporters being the ones who were bitter not the campaign itself. Could make for an interesting convention.

Why would Hillary even need to be vetted? She's been a public figure since 1992, investigated by Ken Starr and a dozen tabloids. If she wanted the job, surely all Obama would need to do is work out with her what's in her job description, not "vet" her.

The running mate doesn't really help the nominee of either party very much.

Remember the 1988 election? Dukakis chose a much better running mate than the first Bush. Dukakis still lost.

The choice of running mate can be extremely helpful. In 1992, Bill Clinton's choice of Al Gore was seen as inspired and unconventional (since Gore was also from a southern state and much like him, at least on the surface) and gave an instant boost to his ticket that Clinton never lost. George W. Bush's choice of Cheney in 2000 was pretty much what Biden is to Obama: an experienced hand to reassure voters that the combined ticket is solid to take over the presidency. Cheney instantly added stature to Bush, as Biden instantly adds stature to Obama.

1988 isn't a good example, because Dukakis wasn't a good candidate and got run over by the Lee Atwater sleaze mobile. And anyone who can't react with genuine outrage when Bernard Shaw asks you if you would want to kill the person who raped and murdered your wife...isn't going to convince middle America to vote for him. A good candidate - a Bill Clinton - could have beaten Bush that year, and Quayle would have made Bush much more vulnerable.

DD said - " The running mate doesn't really help the nominee of either party very much."

LOL. I know. I fall into the same trap each election; The VP will make a difference in the actual administration - not just the election. And before Cheney, I think that was pretty much true. I'm not saying that VPs have no influence. I just wish they had more. And I think that's what most people vote for or hope for in a VP.

So, we'll see, I guess. Biden is a good pick IF he is utilized.

And I admit, I don't know much about Biden longer than 20 years ago. And yes, he'll get some hammering from The Republicans. But who wouldn't have gotten some heat from the Republicans? ( Again, that's not a rhetorical question ).

So now it's on to McCain and his pick. Romney is the only one I know a little about. And I KNOW I do not like him one bit. Bad JuJu with that guy, for me. The other(s) that may be in contention? well, I don't pretend to know who would be best. I just hope it's not Romney. And I hope that because if McCain does win with Romney on the ticket, I really don't like Romney's platforms and stances on issues and general sleeziness. ( the latter feeling is purely a gut feeling. Ignoring it would be stupid ).

Then again, I do not expect Republicans to cater to my desires on matters like this.

So be it.

America is pretty awesome.

For better or worse, 2009 is just the beginning of a new era. I am relieved that Obama has a strong teammate. Barack is complimented perfectly by an experienced, intelligent and lightning quick pit bull like Joe. Looking at what needs to be achieved to win this election for the Democrats, Joe Biden was the only choice, not just the best choice. After eight years years of ruminating, they finally picked a good Joe.

If anyone thinks that running mates do not matter, look at the two crazies the parties expected us to choose from in 2000. The Republicans sent us the CEO of Halliburton. So, the Democratic party felt that Joe Lieberman -- someone just as corporate, war-loving, darkly twisted and nihilist -- was exactly what the ticket needed to win. Like their counterparts in the GOP, Democrats at the time did little homework on the running mates. This "vetting by the people" is new territory. I suspect that many in the "hold your nose and vote Nader" crowd would have voted for Gore if he were paired with a quality veep. He would not have needed Florida. He would have won solid.

This year is different. America can finally begin to heal and move past the dark decades spent under the Clinton and Bush crime families. Going forward, both parties had better get together, take a good hard look at what the executive branch has done since 1980, and be honest about fixing it. If they do not restore the Constitution, regardless of who wins, the great democratic experiment of America is over.

I called Barack and told him to do it.

Then again, I told him to wear a helmet when he rides a bike and to go bowling.

Ehh, 1 for 3, I guess.

I am not so sure about that as I talked today with a very intelligent and articulate recent HS grad that has been fed all the right winged bullshit.

Here's the thing, they've always been teaching their young'en's how to drink the koolaid. All we have to do is enlighten about 10% of them for permanent neoCON dirt nap.

Speaking of neoCON, where the hell is Trixer?
