Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators during the Olympics that they would like to take back:

1. Weight-lifting commentator: 'This is Gregorieva from Bulgaria. I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.

2. Dressage commentator: 'This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.

3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: 'I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.

4. Boxing Analyst: 'Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.

5. Softball announcer: 'If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.

6. Basketball analyst: 'He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.

7. At the rowing medal ceremony: 'Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.

8. Soccer commentator: 'Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field.

9. Tennis commentator: 'One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them... Oh my God, what have I just said?

Matt Lauer and Bob Costas were so damn inane, boring, dull, and vapid during the opening ceremonies, I had to turn it off. Two of them didn't equal half of Jim McKay. Dreadfully under-prepared or uninformed. Where was the 'human interest' stuff?

Wot yall think bout dat?

I really enjoy Bob Costas, he is one of my favorites. I don't think NBC featured him enough, they seemed to have a different crew for each of their 3246541320 channels of Olympic coverage.

Jim McKay WAS the Olympics in the United States though. I got largely hooked on the Olympics in 1984, with Jim McKay leading the charge from Los Angeles.

It's like watching the Rose Bowl without Keith Jackson behind the mic, it just doesn't seem right!

Most or maybe even all of the stuff on the list above is urban myth, or recycled old jokes. I do believe #9 actually happened, though... but not in the Olympics, or even tennis. It was said by some golf commentator about a pro golfer's wife on a late-night talk show sometime within the past year or two. Still, pretty funny stuff...

I can't say anything about #8 because soccer is something I avoid like the Plague.

While I agree about Jim McKay being the best-ever at hosting a huge multi-sport event like the Olympics, I thought Costas and Lauer did a very solid job during the opening ceremonies, and the rest of the Games. Actually, I'd say that this is the first time NBC has done an excellent job covering the Olympics... Not quite as good as ABC during the old days, but excellent just the same.
