On this tragic anniversary of Katrina, I would like to invite you all to read After the Deluge by Josh Neufeld. It is an amazing true story told by those who survived and dedicated to the memory of those that did not.

Remember Katrina and Rita? You know, the big storms that killed and injured a whole lot of Americans and left even more of them homeless? I lost family in the aftermath and perhaps you did too. All of the suffering began three years ago. Is New Orleans and the Gulf Coast back? No. Are they still fighting to rebuild in spite of our government? Yes.

Nothing has changed my belief that Kanye West was right. Just in time for the GOP convention, Hurricane Gustav will be making landfall in Louisiana.

Dobson's compasionate little group asked their minions to ruin Obama's party by praying for rain.

Could it be that God is actually answering their prayers (albeit not quite how they expected) by sending a reminder of Katrina just in time for the RNC?

No.
God graced him with a beautiful night.
(or did he do it to spite the Dobsonites?)

AND..
Something happened that inspired me to think that there may be some hope for our Society after all.

More people tuned in to see Obama speak than watched the finale of American Idol.

Typical lib.

If you'd read the whole article, it wasn't Dobson's group that said that.

It was one guy (albiet on Focus staff) and about 2 paragraphs into the article he said "It was meant to be mildly humorous"

This side of the board is nothing but an Obama love fest.

Never mind Katrina for the moment, Gustav is CAT4 nearing CAT5 with the warm waters of the Gulf promising to sustain/increase its potential power.

George and John will bake a cake.

"Nothing has changed my belief that Kanye West was right."

So you're saying Bush hates Black People???

Pllllllllease! Lets not try to pull the race card, that is just dirty Littlesongs.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe that Bush is a complete moron and doesn't know how to run the country, but I don't think he is racist.

If Bush was a racist and didn't like Black people, I don't think he would have been the governor of Texas and own a ranch in Texas.

The exact quote from Kanye West was, "George Bush doesn't care about black people!"

I will stand by that broad and accurate assessment until I see compelling evidence to the contrary.

Oh for the love of god Littlesongs!

I would not assert that Kanye mentioned all of the people that the WPE does not care about, because that would have taken days. The statement was made while the screen showed the bodies of our brothers and sisters floating face down in millions of gallons of sewage and dead grandmothers and grandfathers in wheelchairs abandoned on the sidewalk.

My uncle died in the aftermath of that flood. He was a white working class business owner. The victims of the tragedy in NOLA and the Gulf Coast were of every race, creed and color, but they were all Americans. Kanye spoke accurately and reflected how the entire community felt at the time: Abandoned. The President left thousands of our fellow Americans to die.

George Bush isn't a racist. He's an idiot. His lack of attention to Katrina is based on class, not race. His inability to fathom the damage the storm was doing is rooted in his inability to communicate with advisors, staff, and a profound lack of common sense. Cmon guys and gals, get it right!

If you do not believe me, or Kanye, how about an older white fellow named Harry Shearer? He has done a great deal of research and has written extensively about the storm and the aftermath. Harry knows a mighty wind when he sees one.

For starters, Kanye West is trying to sell Records and when he made this statement his new album was just about ready to come out. Infact the only memorable part of that benefit tribuite was the Kanye West comment. The media replayed the comment over and over again for weeks after the show aired.

Kanye west was smart in the fact that he knew that statement would draw A TON of attention, not to mention boost his album sales. (which I'm sure it did!

Be cynical if you must, but like the Dixie Chicks, his blunt assessment of our leadership almost cost him his career. I guess that a critical examination of the disaster is too much to ask of you. I will no longer tax your capacity for critical thinking or compassion. Have a wonderful weekend.
