Best and worst remakes?? What are they?

Best Remakes:

Van Halen - "You really got me"-

Guns N roses- knockin on heavens door-

Metallica- "Whisky in the jar"

Jimmi Hendrix- All along the watch tower"

Lenny kravitz "american woman"

Johnny Cash- "rusty cage

Nazereth- "Love hurts"

Black Crowes- "hard to handle"

Rush- "not fade away"

Joe Cocker- "with a little help from my friends"

Worst remakes

Limp Bizkit-"Behind Blue Eyes"- Why would "the WHO" let a crappy band like Limp Bizkit remake one of their songs??

Michael Bolton- Yes that no talent ass clown pretty much destroyed a couple of classics- "when a man loves a woman" and "sitton on the dock of the bay"

Sheryl Crow- "Sweet child O mine"- WTF?

kid Rock- "feel like making love" - Awful remake!

Dolly Parton- Stairway to heaven

William shatner- Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

Ok. YOUR TURN! Obviously this is subjective, but that will make it fun! And if you strongly disagree with a song on someones list, please do speak up!

Hey skep,
Where is your "Worst remakes"???

And by the way, I have to agree with you on Johnny Cash. Infact I think that every song Johnny Cash Remade was better than the original.

Hurt- Much better than the original.( Johnny Cash's version is very creepy, but I still like it better)

Rusty cage- I do Like Soundgarden but for some reason I like the Johnny Cash version better!

Last Kiss - Pearl Jam

Heard it twice this week: on NRK and on a Bend Station. Hate it.

Gotta disagree with GNR - Heaven's Door and Joe Cocker. Ick.

Not to quibble - it's just that I had to confirm that one of my favortie songs by Elton John ( Blue Eyes ) was a cover? I don't think that is correct.

However, I REALLY like cover versions. I often like the original just as much. But sometimes, I prefer the cover.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah. ( Leonard Cohen ) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ

Rufus Wainwright - Across The Universe ( Beatles ). - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H71Fv3PcQQY

Elliot Smith - Because ( Beatles )- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvSdFr3niQM

Guns N Roses - Live And Let Die ( Wings ) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgC4-EDq300

Just about antyhing that Aaron Lewis of Staind touches. That guy, man, he is a gifted singer. Youtube his live performances ( Black from Pearl Jam, Tool ). - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sumiU0u2J9s

Cheap Trick - Ain't That A Shame - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7-f2CIAwYM

George Michael - Somebody To Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c7x2JD_j-0

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Born To Run - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTStMImOtuU

Joan Jett - Crimson And Clover - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdhonK8NMm8

Van Halen - You Really Got Me ( Already mentioned, I know. But that may be my #1 cover, for me ). - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YRqkRmRocQ

U2 - Pop Muzik. They opened up The Pop Mart Tour with that song playing over the P.A. system while they took the stage. They also recorded a studio version of it for CD release. I like it. Plus, I'm a sucker for a cool concert opening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c7U-9gyPsw- and while this linked footage is not of U2 singing the song, that opening is awesome.

Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy ( They won a Grammy for that cover, I believe ) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow1D6Cs_ODM

Now Pornographers - You're Daddy Don't Know - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MfESZHY9Z4

For those of you that think Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me" is a great cover, check out Mott The Hoople in 1970 with their instrumental cover of same (Mick Ralphs on lead guitar, the guy that left Hoople to form Bad Co.). No vocalist theatrics, just pure energy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pbDfP39_6A

Rolling Stones doing Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK5hXQRnxvc

Pink Floyd doing Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door"

http://www.airmp3.net/download/-knocking/mp3/dl_68bb3_119

Blue Öyster Cult doing The Ronettes "Be My Baby"

http://www.mp3sale.ru/track.php?ms_trackid=733842

Billy Joel doing Carol King/Jerry Goffin's "Hey Girl" (think Ray Charles)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZA8nvN50Uk

I could do this all day long ...

I did a bit of googling . . . it turns out you're right. I stand corrected. Man, wrong all these years. I read somewhere that Elton John's "Blue Eyes" was a cover of a Frank Sinatra song. But we're going back to the very early 80's here. So, what can I say, oops! Sorry! :-)

Anyway, its a great song that deserved more airplay, but I guess people were expecting the return of "Captain Fantastic" and were a bit disappointed when the album came out.

Any comments on the instrumental "Carla", Chickenjuggler? I think its a classic.

Ok First Things First:
Skep, you said "but I'm really disappointed with Green Day's "I Fought the Law"

I agree, But I also think that The Clash's version of "I fought the law was awful also. The best version of that song was by the original songwriters- Sony Curtis and The Crickets. Best version hands down!

Cj said: Just about antyhing that Aaron Lewis of Staind touches. That guy, man, he is a gifted singer. Youtube his live performances ( Black from Pearl Jam, Tool )

I agree, I love Aaron Lewis and Stained, one of the most under-rated bands of our time. Stained reminds me a lot of the group Alice in Chains, they have a very dark sound, but also a very empathetic sound to their songs. While this is not a cover, this performace of their song "so far away" is so awesome, I had to post it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dGp2EB0e5U

Metallica's album "Garage Inc" is such an awesome album. My sister who hates Metallica, LOVES this album.

Its Metallica dong nothing but covers, every thing from Punk to Metal.

Metallica's version of "Turn The page" is soooo Much better than Bob Segars original version. I also love the song "whisky in the jar" which I believe is originally done by Thin Lizzy.

Warning- Must crank this song as loud as possible!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh1J4rTgVgE

"I like it. Is that available as a studio version?"

From their first album with Rock & Roll Queen and a cover of Doug Sahms "At The Crossroads" Those 3 were the ones I played the most on the radio from that album. This album, "Mott" and "All The Young Dudes" were probably the 3 albums I played the most, although their other albums had good stuff on them as well.

"Khosara" was a song written in the late 50s by Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi for singer Abdel-Halim Hafez.

Click the links. The Wayne & Wax blog spells it all out in detail and includes damning music clips. Catchy as hell, but theft nonetheless.

LOL! I guess money changes everything. The lads used to get pissed when bands like the Beastie Boys and Little Roger and The Goosebumps twisted their tunes. Under it all was a thick layer of hypocrisy. After all, Zep made a tidy sum and a long career out of blatant appropriation.

When considering who makes better music, one low brow, gut metric is who would kick who's ass in a Celeberity Deathmatch?

Beasties win!

They are about attitude. I like them for the same reasons I like AC/DC. Musically, they don't offer much. I will give them style points though. Highly differentiated and fairly consistent.

IMHO, Puff Daddy isn't in the same class, mostly running on the name and the scene and who he knows.

(both are a bit of crap really, but if you have to discuss who is better, I'll take the Beasties)

Not Fade Away

I'll take the Grateful Dead doing this over Rush or the Stones anyday. Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad is a Dead classic. Rush's version was a B side in 1973 before they really came into their own doing great original stuff. Same with the Stones version. Neither group does the cover regularly which is a Grateful Dead staple.

Johnny Cash doing U2's "One." Well done, although Johnny does lots of covers. Surprised you guys missed this one.

Vanilla Fudge doing Holland/Dozier's (The Supremes) "You Keep Me Hangin' On"

The Who doing Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight To The Blind"

Stevie Ray Vaughan doing Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (slight return)"

Johnny Winter doing The Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed"

Bob Seger doing Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits"

Tom Rush doing Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Going"

Quicksilver Messenger Service tied with Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks (The Band) doing Elias (Bo Diddley) McDaniel's "Who Do You Love"

Led Zeppelin doing Willie Dixon's "I Can't Quit You Baby"

... and the covers just keep on coming ...

Hehe. I think some of these links are a little serious so to lighten up the mood here's a couple of goofy, but good, covers.

Devo covering NIN's "Head Like a Hole" (off the Supercop soundtrack)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFcSHJjDuzs

TMBG covering the Four Lads "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFcSHJjDuzs
(side note: TMBG is a really fun live band)

Some other ones I like are...

the Bangles cover of Simon & Garfunkle's "Hazy Shade of Winter"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFRx4PkXeVM

The aforementioned Johnny Cash cover of "Hurt".

Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along the Watchtower" originally by Bob Dylan

Lenny Kravitz's cover of "American Woman" by the Guess Who

Some bad ones:

Any Motown remake done reggae-style by UB40.

Michael Bolton singing anything is horrid cover or not.

Tom Jones' cover of Prince's "Kiss" (shudder)

Madonna's cover of "American Pie" by Don McClean... it was so god-awful...

And to round out the list of crap-tacular covers... run. hide. cover your ears...
