At a town hall meeting in New Mexico McCain agreed with a woman who suggested we bring back the draft.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 34 ought to be interested in thAT.

And you know it'll look quite different from the draft that you and I somehow escaped, Cweaklie...no 2-S deferments, for example. And if you sign up for the Guard like Bush and his ilk, you'll be toting a gun in Kirkuk in no time.

Interestingly, some of the strongest Congressional advocates of reinstating the draft...John Conyers, Charlie Rangels..are antiwar Democrats. The draft brings it all home. Interesting to see if this becomes an issue to under-30 voters, who have a tendency to fall asleep at the wheel.

Hmmm... so both Republicans and Democrats support reinstating the draft.
Now if only some of the third party candidates would take up the issue.

Eastwood, I believe that some of the concern from Rangel and Conyers is because of this current war. The inner cities have been hotbeds for predatory recruitment for years. If you examine the casualty lists from our conflicts, many brave men and women from their districts have served with honor. Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice and many came back maimed. A large plurality of our brave Armed Forces are people of color. I think the Representatives are interested in ensuring that Americans of every background are represented in the ranks. After all, this country belongs to everyone.

I am opposed to a draft. If they do reinstate conscription, I would support including all women of age as well. The traditional sexism in the defense of this land must end. It is long past time for equality in the ranks. Like African-American pilots in World War Two, women ought to be given an opportunity to prove themselves capable in battle. This kind of development might also motivate more women to oppose a system that in the past has kept them safe at great cost to their brothers. Women should not feel entitled to a share of the wealth and opportunity without sharing the burden of sacrifice.

I support the Trickle Down method of drafting kids. We start at the top of the tax brackets and start drafting kids there and work our way down.

Kids in a lower tax bracket are free to sign up at any time.

These days, so many people are too overeweight to join the military, and there are many more recognized psycological disorders. I wonder what effect this would have on a man's eligibility to get drafted.

I've been hoping for a long time the conservatives would bring back the draft. It would kill their movement for sure.

McCain can't bring back the draft by himself. It has to approved by a majority in both houses of Congress.

Does anyone really think John McCain would use all his political capital to persuade Congress to bring back the draft? There's no public support for it.

There's no public support for it.

Actually, the biggest problem is most of the general public doesn't care, so there's no major public opposition for it, either. All they want is MP3 players with higher capacities, more and more social engineering (networking) websites, and faster internet connections. There are even people out there that don't vote and don't even follow politics because they think it'll be the same-old same-old, no matter what.

They'll never be a draft as long as the economy stinks. The Armed Forces are the only ones offering a job. I'll bet they've turned kids away lately, filling their monthly quota.
