Okay, someone smarter than me please explain what this machine is supposed to do and why some people are so afraid of it. I heard that some chick in India committed suicide because of this machine.

As I understand it, a bunch of European countries have built this big tunnel underground and plan to bounce protons off each other faster and with more power than ever before. Why? Not really sure. Some say it will create a black hole that will swallow the earth. In which case, you might want to re-think your holiday plans.

Vitalogy, check out the Large Hadron Rap video on Paulwalker's link above...should clear up any misunderstandings about the scientific purpose of the collider (or not).

Ten years ago, a fellow by the name of Paul Dixon was a guest on the Art Bell Coast to Coast AM show. Dixon stated that he was a professor at the University of Hawaii and that he was deeply concerned that a new high-energy particle accelerator that CERN was building might be capable of creating a breach to a high-energy dimension that he called "De Sitter space." This, he said would release enough energy to destroy the Earth almost instantly.

After hearing the interview, I paid a visit to the University of Hawaii's web page. It listed Paul Dixon as a member of the psychology department. This led me to breathe a sigh of relief, as I think it is unlikely that a person with training in psychology would know more about advanced particle physics than professional particle physicists. There are such things as De Sitter and Anti-De Sitter space ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Sitter_space ), but the Wikipedia description doesn't sound like the one proposed by Dixon. I do not understand the description and mathematics given for De Sitter space, but I do note that nothing is said about it having a high energy density.

The thing about the CERN reactor, if it does burp, the Bush administration will come to a complete and final end.

You're right Alfredo, just by checking the credentials of folks concerned about black holes and De Sitter space you'll get steered right.

Personally, I'd prefer an opinion from a guy in a wheelchair who also guest-starred in Futurama than a professor at a university in Hawaii! :-)

Remember the John Titor time traveling story from years back? I think this is the closest to an accurate prediction he made.

Anyways his picture of our future while twisted from what we live is just as odd and twisted as his suppossed paralell.

And if it had, you wouldn't be feeling a thing.

Kinda nice how that works out.

If that thing can produce a black hole I wonder if it will be able to consume more matter than the one in my wifes purse!
