Just a few quotes from Mr. Newman:

“Newman's first law: It is useless to put on your brakes when you're upside down.”

“Newman's second law: Just when things look darkest, they go black.”

“The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films.”

“If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.”

“You can't be as old as I am without waking up with a surprised look on your face every morning: 'Holy Christ, whaddya know - I'm still around!' It's absolutely amazing that I survived all the booze and smoking and the cars and the career.”

“If you don't have enemies, you don't have character.”

"You only grow when you are alone."

Just a few more famous lines from characters in movies that Mr. Newman played:

"Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you!"

"If he'd just pay me what he's spending to make me stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him"

"For a moment there I thought we were in trouble."

“I don’t know where I’ve been and I’ve just been there!”

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) – Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman)

“Anything can be great. I don't care, bricklaying can be great if a guy knows what he's doing and why and if he can make it come off.”
The Hustler (1961) – Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman)

“The big difference between people is not between the rich and the poor, the good and the evil. The biggest of all differences between people is between those who have had pleasure in love and those who haven’t.”
Sweet Bird of Youth (1962) – Chance Wayne (Paul Newman)

“People like to do what they used to do after they’ve stopped being able to do it.”
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) – Brick Pollitt (Paul Newman)

“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

I'm a huge fan of Paul Newman's "The Verdict". A truly great movie.

Too, I don't mean to sound trite, but his salad dressings are great. Anyone who could turn that charitable endeavor into a concern which has given over $225 million dollars to charity deserves lasting and heartfelt respect. He cared much about people and you know his wife of 50 years Joanne Woodward will carry their good works forward.

I heard him say he loved the fact that he was on President Richard Nixon's enemies list because of his outspoken opposition to the war in Vietnam.

Paul once said that this was one of the most powerful scenes he had ever acted in. A great movie, if you can find it.

Oh God, what a great scene! I think filmed down on the Siuslaw river near the Oregon coast and Florence. "Sometimes a great notion" - terrific Ken Kesey movie with a great Oregon presence. Too bad it's not available on DVD yet.
