HONG KONG — Stock markets fell sharply in early trading on Monday in Asia on growing fears about the health of banks around the world and the prospects for a downturn in Asian exports to the weakening economies of the United States and Europe.

The Nikkei 225 Index dropped 4.3 percent in Tokyo by early afternoon on Monday, as waves of selling pushed the index steadily lower. The Kospi Index in Seoul was off 4.4 percent. The Standard and Poor’s/Australian Stock Exchange 200 Index in Sydney was down 3.3 percent, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong fell 3.4 percent and the Taiex Index in Taiwan declined 4.1 percent.

Trading patterns in futures markets suggested that the selloff in Asian markets was a foretaste of another weak opening of trading in the United States on Monday. Futures contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Averages were pointing to an opening that would be down 165 points, to 10,199, with a fall in the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index of 19.2 points, to 1,089.10.

Folks, this is a buying opportunity of you've got 10+ years before you'll need that money (or 30 years in my case). We plugged more money into our Roth IRA's last week when the Dow went touched 10,200 and I'm about ready to plug more in today. The markets are reacting heavily because of a lack in confidence, not a major change in the fundamentals.

The Dow has shed nearly 33% of its value in about a year's time. In Oct. of last year it hit it's peak of 14,066. It also stands approx. 11% LOWER than when W. took office in 2001. By the same token, when Clinton left office in 2000, the Dow Jones had gained over 300% value over his 2 terms. It's a tough job to prove the Republicans know how to run an economy or that the Democrats are unfavorable to business.

I saw Jim Cramer on the today show telling people who had five years or less before they needed the money to SELL. He looked very shaken, when he spoke. If you own stock, look out below....my prediction about three months ago was for the dow to bottom at 9400 for a low. Now I don't know if that will hold. regards stevethedj

Auto pay is a great way to go. Especially when the debit occurs the same day the market takes a dump. We do auto pay, plus, we'll make an extra contribution on days when the market takes a dump. We did so again today when the Dow was down 700. I know the market will be lower again soon, but the fact is, nobody ever buys at the bottom, so you must pick and choose your spots.

And, anyone listening to Cramer should look at his record. A broken clock is correct twice a day!

They're reporting almost 3,100 stocks dropped in value, only something like 98 gained value today. I'm afraid the Dow has another 1000 points to drop before things start to level out - at least for this go-round.

At one point today the Stock market was down over 800 points!

Tomorrow (10-7) was perdicted a month ago as a date in history we will remember like 9-11.

Up to today I was thinking this was going to be some kind of attack on American but now I think it's a complete meltdown of the U.S. Stock market followed by a worldwide meltdown. I PRAY I'M WRONG but I couldn't hold my tongue on something as big as this.

Back in Nov. of 2004 just after Bush was elected for a second term, one of our neighbors commented, "there are going to be some dark days ahead of us."

Bush's resume. 9-11. War in Iraq. Stock Market failure. Major Job Loss.

After the first 4 years how in the world did this guy get a second term?

I hope to God we are smarter this time around.

"After the first 4 years how in the world did this guy get a second term? "

Cumulative effect of lack of focus on education by Congress under the Republican Party in '94 - '06. Lack of focus by Gore in his campaign.

or:

Too many good ol' boys in their pickup trucks with their shotguns wanting four more years to try and get to hoist a few with the Shrub, go out back and do a line and burn a few.

or if you prefer:

Say it ain't so, Chris. There ya go agin. Lookin' backwards.

Andy say what you will, it happened on Bush's watch.

I'm not ignorant to believe this wasn't in the cards for a long time, but at some point someone's gotta step up and deal. Bush had his chance and didn't. Sorry, but this will be apart of Bush's ever growing legacy.

And by the way Andy since when did you take over the job of God?

"And by the way Andy since when did you take over the job of G-d?"

??? Non-sequitur, Chris. You asked how the shrub was re-elected.
I answered in essence there are too many undereducated, uninformed Americans which is largely the result of our education system being underfunded, directly traceable to GOP dogma. In any event, how the Shrub won in '04 is irrelevant.

Now, would you care to explain your comment?

Wasn't it clinton who got us into this mess? As Much as I would love to blame George Bush, I thought Bill Clinton was the one who let just about anyone get a house loan. He loosened the restrictions, letting everyone and their mom pull out loans.

Sorry Trixter, I have to agree with MANn Coulter on this one. The Dems are to blame for this mess we are in.
Again I would LOVE to blame Bush on this one, but I think it was Clinton who started this.

I guess getting a blow job by Monica in the Whitehouse makes you happy and extremely generous. Billy wasn't thinking straight. All the blood was rushing out of his head and down to his Willy!

Not just "anyone"; That was Bush.
For Clinton, it was more stringent. You had to be under 30 and female. And at least slightly good looking.

Beano sez: Wasn't it clinton who got us into this mess?

If Clinton was still president, there would be no mess to begin with, we'd all be rolling in gravy from our stock and house investments -- ALL of us. (And bin Laden would be hanging from a tree and Saddam still confined by our no-fly restriction, and with the money not spent looking for imaginary WMDs, the new Interstate bridge would be under construction now, and no doubt, Alaska's bridge to nowhere. Tina Fey would only be known as the star of 30 Rock and Palin would be submitting her resignation over troopergate.)

Unless of course the person who made that prediction was Jerome Corsi.
