Other than reading/posting on pdxradio. :-)

Just thought it might be fun to start a thread asking what other stuff people are doing while they're here.

Yes, I'll start.

I'm doing laundry and listening to 1450. Just heard "Don't You Forget About Me" for the first time in a while.
(Yes, I realize I'm posting this at 5:30 in the morning on a Saturday. Went to bed early last night, so I woke up early this morning.)

Read paper with coffee while listening to Willy Porter. Made breakfast. Cleaned up the entire kitchen, emptied dishwasher, refilled dishwasher. Swept deck. Took dogs outside. Picked up poop. Folded some laundry. Took a shower. Went online, and here I am.

My life is soooooo exciting!

I just made up 5 Leaf-bag size bags of Baby M's clothes and stuff to donate, and am leaving to deliver them to Dr Teresa Gipson at the OHSU clinic on 39th and Division, she's leaving this week for her clinic in the slums of Nairobi.

Check it out:
http://www.rayofhopeinternational.org

"The Ray of Hope Foundation was founded in 2003 by Dr. Teresa F. Gipson, a Family Physician in Portland.

In 2004, Gipson helped to open the Ray of Hope Clinic in Kawangware, a slum on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, with funding from ProjectContactAfrica (Kermit Washington's) and a grant from the National Basketball Players Association. The Ray of Hope Clinic and Community Center focuses on curative, preventive
and educational services for people living in the slums. The clinic is a venue for education, focusing on updating skills, public health issues and community activism. Gipson travels
back and forth from Kenya to her home in Oregon and new position as assistant professor of Family Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University."

I'm in beautiful Jackson, Wyoming for the weekend. Did I mention it is beautiful here?

Leaves are turning golden brown, temp is near 70, and all is good.

Two thoughts. People still have money, it seems.
And it really is beautiful here.

Just got home from the Movie Theater. Saw W. Eating Green Chilli burito and beans for dinner now.

It was an OK movie, funny in places. Ironic in others. If you can believe Oliver Stone, and that in itself is a strech ...Dick Cheney and W. didnt really get along all that well. Infact Dick Cheney and just about everybody in the cabinet didnt get along well. The movie made a fool out of Condi Rice more than W. really....and oh yes of course Rumsfeld...

Hey Newflyer is that a trick question? ;o)

I am balancing the checkbook.

That, and I am also currently in the process of suffering a really, really nasty stomachache from all the chicken strips and carrot cake I ate at Rose's a couple of hours ago.

(Yeah, I really do need to stop overeating. It appears not to be within the best interest of my digestive system. ;o)

I'm eating a late lunch and listening to Bill Valentine ("The Rich Life") on KXL. He started off this hour with the topic of "dirigisme," which peaked my interest. I had to look up how that is spelled, so please don't beat me up for being an egg-head.

Dirigisme is a French word that describes a society where businesses are privately owned, but there is heavy government regulation and oversight. Valentine was pointing out that this is the appropriate term to describe the current policies of some European countries, such as Germany and France. Valentine said that there is a trend toward dirigisme in the US, first with the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation that was triggered by Enron, World Com, and other corporate scandals and now with the government bailout of the banks. His concern is that the legislation that comes out of the current banking scandal may be excessively punitive in nature. He says that regardless of who wins the Presidential election, that administration's economic performance will only be as good as its economic advisors.

After I get done with lunch, it's off to cut down some blackberry bushes and to cut up some big particle board sheets.

Nah, I meant for it to be a fun thread on what other things were going on as you're reading the message board. And for those of you that Keith Olberman (sp?) wouldn't say "are all alone," TMI!

Right now: Listening to the Hot 8 at 8 on C89.5 (online). Staring at my ballot, that just arrived in the mail earlier today (I put it right between the keyboard and monitor, so I can't say I didn't remind myself).

Middle school and high school homework.

Alg. II & various fraction manipulation bits for middle school.

rant mode = 1
Did you know my daughters old school (Parkrose) teaches decimal simplification for fractional components of many Alg. I problems? Now she's having trouble with this school, that does not do that.

That's dumbing down for you. Helps with the scores, but really doesn't do the kids any longer term favors.

You mean that they're telling the students, "if you see 3.5, round it up to 4 and that's good enough?"

Ya,

And the next time someone wants to teach your children decimal simplification , tell them that if use of such is becomes common, we will never be able to land another probe on Mars or launch another satellite in orbit again.

Or calculate the signal pattern for another directional AM antenna.

Heh... No kidding! No wonder the probe ended up drilling a very expensive hole! I don't even understand how kids would learn to correct for units, if they are not manipulating basic fractions. Miles per hour is a goddammed fraction, and it's quite different from miles per second...

Feet -vs- meters... All sorts of trouble here.

If I had only known. I would have chewed ass and not stopped until I was good and ready. Medical stuff and paying the bills helped me miss this one. Damn. Now the kids are working double time to catch up and that sucks.

Alfredo, no.

Say you've got a fraction somewhere in an equation. Instead of dealing with it as a fraction, the school had them resolve it to a decimal expression, then continue working with the equation, solving as needed from there.

Never mind that things like 2/3 do not represent in decimal in a precise way.... .66667 anyone?

WTF is that?

Also, all the little shortcuts that fractions bring to the table are denied to the student, if they are largely ignoring them in this fashion.

So, they trade precision for the ability to grok cross multiplication, for example. Worse, if the unknown happens to be in the fraction, and the equation needs to be solved for that, just what the hell are the kids supposed to do then?

The kids struggle through fractions at that time, hobbling their efforts to handle higher math, when they would otherwise have had fractions and the concepts surrounding them down cold.

It's a dumb down that has some limited practical application, but does not do any favors for them otherwise.

Ordinary people will do this, and that's ok! We ordinary people use the math we use and if we don't need much, we don't use much.

On the other hand, how are we supposed to be extraordinary people, if we are denied the tools we need to take a shot at it in the first place?

In schools we are supposed to be building good, capable people, not satisfying some lowest common denominator test program.

rant mode = 0 (again)
