Merkley: "You know I advocate for tax hikes every night in living rooms across Oregon because we have to close the tax loopholes that were torn in our national treasury over the past eight years. In fact during this decade, the General Accounting Office anticipated a $5 trillion surplus, and now instead we are running trillions of dollars short. Part of it is the war in Iraq. But a lot of it is the loopholes that were torn in the national treasury for the wealthiest Americans, and indeed for the special interest corporations. We need to close those loopholes in order to be able to restore our national treasury, to take on global warming, to take on education and to take on national health care."

Sure.

While I don't agree with it, you know that EVERY campaign edits their opponents sound bites to suit their needs to make them look bad.

I'd like to see a a rule for political ads that says they can't even mention their opponent.

ALL ads would have to focus ONLY on that particular candidates issues and policies.

I can't wait until the election is over and all the %&#@ing political ads are off TV.

I can't wait until the election is over to see the look on the faces of the conservatives when they realize they took it in the sack big time.

Plus, my arrogant, ultra conservative buddy will be handing over $100 cash to me because he was blind to reality and couldn't keep his big mouth shut.

Like the campaign ads, these quotes are just edited down for size. Some extra words were ditched, so it flows real nice.

Gordon Smith on Hurricane Katrina:

"At a time when millions are displaced and seeking federal and state assistance, we move forward on that portion of a legislative package that would cut programs like Medicaid, Food Stamps, WIC, housing and education. We believe it is prudent and necessary to ultimately reduce available funding and possibly divert the focus of program staff away from relief efforts."

NHHA

Gordon Smith on Hate Crime Legislation:

"I rise today to speak about the need for hate. Each Congress, I introduce hate legislation that would add new categories to current hate, sending a signal that violence of any kind is acceptable in our society. Likewise, each Congress I have come to the floor to highlight a separate hate that has occurred in our country. I believe that the Government's first duty is to hate."

GovTrack

That is a taste of your own medicine Senator Smith. Yeah, kinda sucks doesn't it?
