Will someone please stop this insanity! This from The Eugene Register-Guard:

----------------Hunter charged in fatal shooting in forest----------------

COOS BAY — A Southern Oregon man is charged with manslaughter in a hunting fatality over the weekend.

Police said Kelly Johnson, 41, says he was aiming at a deer when 20-year-old Cody Armstrong was shot in the head Sunday in the Siskiyou National Forest about 16 miles from the small town of Powers.

Both men are from Powers, where school district Superintendent Matt Shorb said the death was like a family loss.

And now this from The Associated Press:

------------Wounded deer appearing in Oregon Klamath area------------

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Deer with arrows in their bodies have become common near the line between Klamath County, where hunting is permitted, and the city of Klamath Falls, where it is not.

City police on Sunday euthanized a deer with an arrow in its hindquarter, the third such incident in a week near Upper Klamath Lake.

Area resident Megan Ericks said one deer died after an arrow struck it in the gut and that two others have been seen wounded in the area.

Another shot in September was treated by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Bow hunting season for most of Oregon ended in September.

Police say prosecution is difficult if out-of-season hunting cannot be proved because there is no law against being a bad shot.

I have to say that hunters shooting other hunters (or themselves) by design or accident is karma returned for hunting unarmed animals. Unless one really need to live off the food being hunted, they're chickenchucks. So, if they shoot one of their own, well done I say, well done.

This kind of thing has been going on for thousands of years. You take your chance. That is why you wear yellow and red vests and brighlty colored hats.

Lot of hunters like to wear camouflage, this can be a big mistake, cause if another hunter sees some movement , it looks the color of the wooded environment, which is what the animal and the camouflaged person looks like as well.

And people who are too lazy to track down their kill, or too out of shape to chase it down, need to be sitting at home watching outdoor sportsman on TV and not in the woods.

Hunting is no more barbaric than the slaughter of cows, pigs and various CAPTIVE animals, that happens year round on a daily basis. At least the deer and elk get to run around free. Also since people decided to kill off most of the predator animals for "safety" there is nothing to naturally keep the deer population in check. Then you have too many animals starving to death. At least most of the hunted animals are used for food. They are in our part of the woods anyway.

Captive animals are put to death quickly. Wounded animals die slowly.

Then you have too many animals starving to death.

This happens in nature all the time. It keeps things in balance.

What I meant by "barbaric" is the enjoyment found in killing animals. I'm not naive enough to know that animals have to die to put the steak on the grill. But to gain enjoyment out of it is a little bit sickening. I think that people that kill animals for enjoyment are more likely to do the same to humans.

I'm torn on this. Killing animals for the sheer sport of it isn't ok with me.

On the other hand, there is an art and skill to hunting. When it's necessary to do, then it needs to be done well, and the whole animal needs to be consumed. IMHO, then it dies for something and we all die, and we all would like to die for something.

Where there is art and skill, there is gonna be some level of pleasure or at the least satisfaction. There has to be, otherwise there is no art and perhaps no skill.

Many animals in captivity are not killed quickly and humanely. Have you ever seen what they do to turkeys? The way factory farm animals have to live out their lives is my main issue, some never get out of their tiny enclosures or smell fresh air. I also don't see how it's better for an animal to starve to death and be wasted. My husband is a hunter. He and others in our family eat every edible bit of the deer or elk (I'm a vegetarian). He is the kindest, nicest person I know - a much better person than I am. True, some people are reckless and shouldn't be out there, but not all hunters are potential murderers.

I like to fish, although I'm not a regular fisherman. And I prefer to catch and release. Hitting the fish on the head isn't enjoyable to me.

OK. What's the difference between hooking a fish in the lips and tearing it's skin and ripping it's lips and shooting an animal with a gun or bow and arrow?

Just playing devil's advocate here.

I like to hunt and fish, although I don't get the opportunity to do either as much as I'd really like to!

We usually do the early Elk season with muzzle loaders, but I've was traveling both this year and last year and missed the season.

I do the catch and release thing too. Although If by some miracle I was to land a big salmon, sturgeon or halibut, it's going home with me for sure!!

This is what I've learned recently -- the best way to hunt is from a helicopter with an Uzi -- quick and sure kills.

What you don't do is hunt with partners, go to gun shows or accept invitations from vice presidents or hotel moguls -- doing so will leave you either maimed, arrested or dead.

. . . and with a little luck, all 3

Trixter, Hell, the only time we've ever seen any Elk or Deer is when the season is closed!!

They are smart. They go into hiding when the season opens and come out when it closes!

We're not real serious when we go out. Lots of people get up at 4 AM and are out in the woods by 5. We get up about 7 or 8, have breakfast and maybe get out by 10!

I just enjoy the time outdoors. If I were to shoot something that would just be a bonus!

Our house is in the woods and we see tons of deer all the time. Along with our pond that serves as a duck breeding ground. I love nature but I also know that we need to thin the heard every once an awhile so I'm not anti-hunting. It's just too bad we can't thin the human heard every 2-4 years.

In the woods here too. If I see a hunter step foot on my property they are DEAD MEAT! I'll be giving them a verbal dressdown of the kind they give deer.
