Probably a good thing in the short term. Obama has so much on his plate now with the economy that it's probably best to avoid all the disruption by turning over the top of the Pentagon at this moment too - and that could in fact delay America's departure from Iraq.
Gates is a good guy. He actually worked for Jimmy Carter's NSC (and has had some good things to say about Carter) as well as for all the Republican presidents since Nixon. So he has "bipartisan experience."
