name a band that has come within the last 20 years that you ABSOLUTELY can't stand. This is a band that you absolutely detest, This is a band that you just CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY A PERFECTLY SANE person would listen to. Obviously this is subjective, but thats what makes it so much fun!

Ok, I'll start!

The worst band (In my opinion) is CREED!
Scott Stapp is an A$$hole and doesn't deserve to get any RADIO AIRPLAY! THe music is CRAP, it all sounds the same and THANKGOD most program directors in portland have removed Creed from their playlist. Although I did hear "With arms wide open" on K103 (of all places) right before they switched over to all Christmas music! \

Ok, YOUR TURN!

I'll stick with genres that I like:

Red Hot Chili Peppers.

There are a couple songs that are borderline "ok", but I just don't get them. I have to change the station. Even to Rush (Limbaugh).

Weezer.

Same thing. One or two. I just don't understand their popularity.

Spin Doctors.

Heck, I'd listen to Hannity first.

Oh where, oh where to start?

Way too many to name just one!

ANY band that plays rap.

ALL the "boy" bands. (New Kids On The Block, Beastie Boys, etc.)

The Pretenders, The Cars, Cindi Lauper, Madonna...

So much crap, so little time to type!

B-52s. Makes me want to slit my wrists with a bowling pin. SOOOOOOOoooo bad.

And, to be honest, I can't stand REM. Never have, never will, and I know that I will catch flak in here for it ... I just don't see it.

I agree with Skybill on the boy bands .. gag me with a 2x4.

Coldplay.

Squishing Squashes er uhm I mean Smashing Pumpkins.

Bjork. I get the bile in the throat thing whenever I hear her caterwauling. Then, after the burning of stomach acid on my Adam's apple, I go into a full flung psycho-billy, freak-out rage.

As I get older, I like less and less the following couple bands:

Fleetwood Mac
the Offspring
Primus

Primus ... they aren't musically savvy, but funny in a crude way. An acquired taste probably, for the sophomoric type.

Fleetwood Mac, wow. They're like fine wine to me, they get better with age. I'll definitely take Fleetwood Mac over the new drivel coming out these days!

I own one of the two. "In a Metal Mood" was the CD title. They tried to market it as "so bad it's cool," but even that couldn't save it.

How 'bout the band Europe? They sounded like Star Search rejects.

The first problem with new groups is not spending any money on good equipment.
Lets Compare shall we:

Maroon 5 Drum Kit

Rush (Neal Peart) Drum Kit Neal, are you in there somewhere?

The second problem is not having any talent. So, even with great equipment, it will still sound like the crap it is so I guess why spend money on all the equipment.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a mentality today that anything can be fixed in the studio using Pro Tools. The vocalist can't stay on key? No problem--Pro Tools will fix that. There will be no shortage of karaoke club caliber people being foisted on the public as the next "big thing."

In today's landscape musicians do not make money on studio recordings/downloads/CD's unless they're the Rolling Stones.

Money is made in performing live shows. It has always been the case that musicians that rely on the studio engineers and producers to come up with a product that can not be duplicated live have had short careers and limited success. Many legacy acts can no longer profit significantly from excellent studio recordings but still command large crowds when and where they play live. Up and comers not only have to have that near flawless studio track, but they better damn well put on a show that is up to the standard they set in the studio.

Worst band in the last "20" years? The list is too long to name one. It's also difficult to name one "best" band since 1988. Many of the bands named go back further than '88. REM started in '80 and had 5 albums out by '87. Red Hot Chili Peppers had 3 albums out by '87. In fact the majority of the bands listed in the thread really don't meet a strict criteria of "last 20 years." Fleetwood Mac has been around since the 60's and hasn't done anything in the last twenty years of significance. So I guess I'm just missing the excitement at taking pot shots at various dislikes.

Darktemper, it's quite possible Neil (ei not "ea") was influenced by this band.

I guess I'm just not that big of a music snob to subjectively suggest one band is better than another and who deserves to be on a list like this. Hard to judge taste.

Many of today's bands can make money just not a living like the older bands. But then again what do you define success as a musician anyway?

Today's technology does allow bands to create a buzz within their genre if they have someone who is technically savvy and internet smart. I have a second cousin who was in a hard alternative band that has toured the US and Europe more than once. Small venues but passionate fans.

Some individual performers or soloists can do quite well. A guy like Michael Allan Harrison doesn't really need to travel. He plays locally, has many different albums and makes a living playing music. Not a multi-millionaire but certainly a a guy whose probably has a six- figure income.

Some of their stuff I sort of like ("Shoebox", "One Week", the theme song from "Seven Little Monsters"), but not all.

Skybill, I like New Kids on the Block. Of course, that's the stuff I grew up with so I think that makes kind of a difference (the whole "generation" thing and all that.......)

Mostly dislike:
Bob Dylan (there are some songs by him that I do like ["Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues", "Lay Lady Lay", the segment of "Mr. Tambourine Man" that the Byrds covered some time later, a few others], but I have always thought he sounds a bit "whiney".)
Maroon Five (Do like "Sunday Morning" tho)
Cold Play (liked "Cold Rush To The Head", or whatever the record that had "Clocks" was called)
Carman (although I thought "Some O Dat" was rather decent)
The Rolling Stones (specifically their post-1970s stuff)
Depeche Mode (specifically post-1980s; "Playing the Angel" was horrid)

Can't stand:
The Shi*s (I think you know who I mean ;o)
Hanson
Backseat Boys
*NSUKS
James Blundt
that kid who did the anoying "You Had A Bad Day" thing a couple years back
Hannah Montana (and sitting through her "film" last year was absolute torture)
Christina Aguileria (irritating)
Brittney Spears (irritating AND trampy)
Paris Hilton (yes, some people should, by Government mandate, NEVER be allowed to make records regardless of constitutionality!)
Weezer
Ashley Simson
Jessica Simson
Justin Timberlake
Red-Hot Chili Peppers
Marilyn Manson
Insane Clown Possee
Ennimem
M.C. Hammer (heard "You Can't Touch This" more than enough in the 90s, can't stand him now)
Allan Sherman (he just wasn't that great a singer or even that funny, but again, I think it's the whole generation thing taking effect......)

I could go on for at least a couple more threads' worth, but I really don't need to max out Dan's bandwidth.

Let's "Edit Add:" to the Can't Stand list: pretty much all the acts Trixter and Beano mentioned above, with the exceptions of those few I also mentioned in the Mostly Dislike list, and
Primus
White Lion
Hollywood Undead
30 Seconds to Mars
TOOL and
Kid Rock
because I have never heard any of their recordings (as I am aware, at least) and can't give any opinion of them that has any sense of validity ;o)

Although I vividly remember my intense dislike for NKOTB, they are disqualified because their debut album came out in 1986. Looking at a photo of them in a recent performance ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/76/NKOTB_2008-11-06.jpg ), they just look like a bunch of Gen-X guys who could easily be my co-workers or somebody's dad.

I think two bands need rescuing from the WORST BAND pit. REM and perhaps Linkin Park.

Granted, you may personally not like them, but their successes can be understood. Korn and Tool defies explaination.

I find Primus listenable. Of late I've enjoyed "My Name Is Mud". The video is amusing:

The Killers may make my Top 20 of the past 20.

Linkin Park is up there too. Incubus. Hinder.

What's that band that has a lead singer that takes himself very seriously, I think he's got a bull nose-ring, he's got a signature vocal thing he does where he kinda " growls." I think it's the same band that has the " Ohhh ahahaha " at the start of a hit for themsleves.

I like Primus but totally get why others don't. Same with Ween. Although I like Ween a TON more.

I like BNL in small doses.

There a few bands that started out SO great, to me, then fell SO hard SO fast: The Dandy Warhols I LOVED for two albums. Then they lost Eric Hedford and lost their heart.

In the early to mid 90's there was an influx of new bands ( at least to me they were new ) that caught my attention then quickly lost it. Butthole Surfers, Smoking Popes, Garbage,

I still really like Tool, Pearl Jam, Green Day.

In fact, in reading a big article about Green Day and their recent recording sessions, there is a chance that they will be the biggest band for a few years after their next release.

Oh well, it's all subjective. I've had my mind changed by others ( more often than not it was my brother ) making me give them another shot. ( XTC, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty, numerous power pop bands that I thought I knew enough about to make a decision - I was wrong. Thank God ) While other times it's the band themselves that have caused me to give up on them. ( Coldplay, Lenny Kravitz ).

But if there was ANY band I wish would pull a rabbit out of their hat and blow me away, it's THE CULT. I would LOVE for them to crank out ONE more amazing album before they go.

At least the lead singer of Nickelback sounds like a nice guy(from what I've heard) He may put out Crappy music but at least he doesn't act like a total tool like Scott Stapp does.

I'm taking TOOL off my list! While I'm not a huge fan of tool, I do think they are interesting and different from pretty much every band on the radio. I think a lot of people don't llike them because they don't have the "Commercial" sound to their music. They're not exactly mainstream sounding, which makes them kinda cool!

I don't like them but I can accept them for being "different".
So yes, Tool has been taken off my "Shit" List. Now Korn, On the other hand, stays. Id love to hear why Korn is so great. Is there any Korn fans on this board??? Because Korn is one band I just don't get!

Yeah I like TOOL. I think the contrast between heavy guitar/bass rifts with the falsetto of Maynard James Keenan is quite a distinct version of metal/hard rock. While I certainly wouldn't claim to be a superfan, TOOL helped move metal away from the Hair Bands of the late eighties. Again this is probably generational and perhaps stylistic differences in musical taste but a lot of what has been posted is pretty accurate.

R.E.M., however, is not one of the worst bands ever. I think them living through underground success of the college scene, sky-rocketting superfame in the early nineties, losing their drummer Bill Berry to retirement, and coming through on the other side to still crank out good tunes is a testament to their appeal and sales.

That might be why the band moved on without him and morphed into Alter Bridge. I don't think the rest of the band could stand him as well......
