Kings of LEON RocK! I didn't think I'd like them, then I bought their new CD and HOLY CRAP IS IT GOOD!!! Every single song on the CD is good! Its not a CD where you skip over 3 or 4 songs to get to the good songs because they are all good! Im also really getting into the group "Eagles of Death Metal" their new cd sounds like a mix between KISS and The Rolling Stones, thats how I would describe them.
What are some of your favorite cd's that have come out within the last 15 years???

They say it takes 10 years to write a first album, 6 months for the 2nd album. Bands that kinda show their mettle often prove that wrong.

Kings Of Leon is a GREAT example. Their latest album took a vocal turn and a songwriting turn that showed they LOVE music. And they have some chops. AND they could give a shit about being pigeonholed.

Pearl Jam did that to a degree unmatched, for me. The leap they took between Ten and Vs. is, again, to me, unparalelled.

Queen also did that. Queen I and Queen II are two disparate albums that lay a foundation that is showing tremendous promise.

Green Day did that too.

There are others.

I like Green Day but "American Idiot" was WaaaayOver-rated and in my opinion one of the weakest Green Day albums EVER!!! Its not even close to as good as "Dookie" or "Insomniac". Plus "American Idiot" contained the worst Green Day song ever recorded "Wake me up when september ends" GAG ME!!!!! That sounds like a song Jessica Simpson or brittney spears would write!

I disagree. Green Day is getting better and better, to me.

No Way! Green Day is getting too mainstream (in a bad way) there songs are becoming more poppy and less rock! I don't know how you can think a song like "wake me up when september ends" is as good as a classic like "Geek stink breath" or Longview.

Not EVEN CLOSE!!!

I don't think September is better than Geek. Geek is one of my favorites. But they have shown the kind of growth I respond to.

Let's just see where they go on the next album.

I still think American Idiot is seminal work.

I still cling to Paul's Boutique for The Beasties too though. So take it for what it's worth.

I remember listening to Green Day circa 1991 on WEGL's Mystery Playhouse. Back then, Green Day was a pop-punk band on an independent label (Lookout! Records). They were not considered to be really heavily into serious socio-political themes, so many punk fans considered it no big loss when they signed on to Reprise records. They just vowed never to buy any more Green Day albums. Bad Religion's move to the world of major labels, on the other hand, pissed off a lot of punk fans.

According to Wikipedia, Green Day was founded in 1987, so strictly speaking, they couldn't qualify as one of the best new bands of the past 15 years.

I consider myself a late bloomer when it comes to music. I seem to catch on to bands after they have become popular.

I remember first meeting a college roommate and talking music and our likes and dislikes. At that time I didn't like nor understand bands like Nirvana and Green Day, of course musical tastes change over time.

I am not really a consumer of music like much of you guys are here but I do listen.

American Idiot to me is the best album of the modern age. It seemed like everyone listened to that album. And everyone liked the album as well.

Currently I am really enjoying the music from Carolina Liar, Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol, and The Decemberists.

I might get pelted by a thousand spitwads for saying this: there was a brief time in my life (roughly from age 16 to 21), where I had the expectation that music should bring up serious sociopolitical themes and that the artists should be ideologically pure in that regard. Thus, I saw Bad Religion, DOA, 7 Seconds, etc. moving to major labels as impending doom for the world of serious, worthwhile music.

After that time, different things were going on in my life, my priorities changed, and my beliefs started drifting away from the ideologies espoused in the punk lyrics. To me, music then became more about entertainment, rather than a vehicle for delivering an ideological message. At that time, I also started to see a lot of the quibbling over who the "cool" bands are as being pretty sophomoric. Ultimately, these discussions degenerate to "Band X is cool because I like the way they sound and/or my cool friend(s) think that they are cool. Band Y is uncool because I don't like the way they sound and/or because my cool friend(s) don't like them and/or because too many uncool people who are not "in the know" like them.
