The music variety now ROCKS!!
50's, 60's, 70's 80's, rock, country, standards, wow!
WTG Larry Bohnsack or whoever added the 50's and early 60's all day!
Now we need to hear some more voices, besides Eve and Stella!

You HATED to?

No you didn't.

Even people who don't care to spend scads of money to improve their product, have to spend something now and then. Who here, who is familiar with KLYC and it's present ownership expect L.B. to suddenly start pouring buckets of money into the operation? Not me, that's for sure.

I've been hearing some GREAT music on KLYC lately.

They're definitely mixing up the playlist and going with deeper cuts.

Kudos to Eve, as I'm certain she's the one responsible for any forward direction at 1260 AM.

I refuse to be dragged into another KLYC thread... but, ohmygawd, here we are!

Eve, Stella, Larry and a music service off the satellite. That's all they got. I suppose they do OK for the resources, but the listeners (and advertisers) are few because of too many other choices these days for news and entertainment.

Kudos to KLYC for hanging in there, but it's like watching a model T Ford enter the Indy 500. Kinda nostalgic, but the novelty wears quickly.

"Eve, Stella, Larry and a music service off the satellite."

No, there's that new guy there now, too. I forget his name, but he sounds like a younger guy with a really nice upbeat on-air personae.

Now to spice up this thread, here's a KLYC-oriented discussion from the McMinnville paper:

Larry doesn't use satellite for music!
Stella told me they get their music from a company in Seattle!
Muzak?
I was bored last night, during the Spanish program!
But at Midnight, Stella came back saying its Monday morning, March 10, 2008!
I called to say hi, and got voice mail!
She must be voice tracking each days programs to play after 12am!

Gee, voicetracking? Ya think?

I'll bet KLYC is still using their outdated Sentry Systems automation. Still workable, but if it ever goes "Breasts up," (Can you say tits on here?) they would be in pretty significant trouble, since the company that would service that program went out of business several years ago.

I don't know the name of the company that provides them their music, but back in the days when that company sent out their music on 10 inch reels, it was Century 21(Am I right Mike?). Just because LB can afford that service, doesn't mean he's actually trying to prevent his station from becoming a machine shop in that podunk business park he's in.

Hearing a new song on KLYC, or the occasional different voice is nothing to get excited about.

I'll bet they're not.

If they're getting music from Seattle, it's probably from Jones Radio Networks (formerly Broadcast Programming) and they use AudioVAULT (but probably support other products).

It's very kind of you to offer. However, rather than be tagged as some kind of a radio groupie, it's probably better to admire KLYC and their great on-air talent from a distance.

However, if you ever DO get to have coffee with Eve or the gang over there at KLYC tell them 'hi' from their fans at PDXRadio.com and make sure to post a report here for us!

I listened for a while a few days ago mid-day. I was not impressed. I heard cuts that I hear all the time on KHits and KOOL....

On AM, 1010 has the ones that others aren't playing and it seems to be getting deeper. There are cuts I don't care for but they are from the 50's. And I do hear things there I haven't heard for a long time.

1lossir,
Last time I checked, that unnamed music service from Seattle, sends their music out on CD. KLYC and KLOG in Kelso/Longview when they ran Sentry Systems, both had a rack of CD players, from which the automation played the music that it was told to play, when it was told to play it.

I thought Jones Radio sent out satellite formats?

Perhaps Eve could fill us in on this. (Herb, leave her alone, you stalker!!!!) :-)

I would be willing to bet on CD as well for KLYC...I wouldn't be suprised if they are still running the old Sentry Systems automation! Isn't that the system that uses a bunch of cartridge based cd players? Seems like a lot of mechanical stuff and moving parts to try and keep maintained.

We have actually gone to a new computer system, called Digital Jukebox. Everything is run through computers now, it's working pretty well for us, there are some quirks but overall I like the system. We do have about 30 CD players we're looking to get rid of, and our collection of CD's from Jones radio is pretty extensive but we'll keep that. The DJB has really cut my hours down, doing traffic and running logs takes only mintes now. If anyone wants to come in and take a look at the station you're more than welcome. And Mike, let's do coffee, when and where?

QPE...Sentry Systems was an automation program, loaded onto a computer. No cart carosels, or anything like that.

I always thought that Sentry used those 6 disc CD changer "cartridges"...like the old Pioneer ones...a whole rack of cd players...I didn't think that they used the old "carousel" cartridge tape system!(that would be TOO ancient!) Sometimes I have a hard time making myself clear! :-)

I may have to give a call to the folks at KLYC, see what kind of new system they're using.(Our programming here is so simple--no ad traffic to keep track of--so I just use Zararadio...it works pretty well for us! Now if we needed to voicetrack...that would be another story!)

I looked at the "Digital Jukebox" website...looks like a pretty good system for the price. Sounds just right for a station like KLYC.

Me too. Imagine having that problem if you make your living broadcasting sports like I do!

You described the way KLOG/KUKN used Sentry Systems perfectly. They had a large bank of multi-disc CD changers in each studio. KLYC had basically the same thing, but on a smaller scale.

They're playing some really deep cuts this week.
On Tuesday I heard a song I'd never heard before by "Looking Glass," the band who recorded "Brandy."
In other hot KLYC news, Stella Bohnsack, who appears to be filling in for Eve Fuller during Spring Vacation, was among the first to break the story on the tragic car crash near Dayton.

I think that was it, Semoochie.
Don't know how high it charted, but if I ever heard it, it would have been for a very brief time in the '70's.

Like another '70's winner, Joe Namath, KLYC is really going deep!

The vocals were very 'Brandy-ish' so if they had a top 40 or top 100 hit with Jimmy Loves Mary Ann, that was it.

#33 in 1973. I remember the song but haven't heard it since. It just occurred to me that there are enough songs like that, which could be played about once per hour, that is, an "oh wow" could be played once an hour without disrupting the station's sound but there could be an element of surprise. It shouldn't be more than once per hour and you might never have to repeat that specific song again!

#33. Wow. Thanks.

I completely agree with you and don't know why more Radio stations don't add some songs that haven't been burned to a crisp into the mix.

So many programmers are wrong on this. Plenty of listeners don't want to continuously hear the top 10, again and again.

The few stations that go deep are great, like KLYC and maybe Charlie Busch at KLOO-FM who may have been doing this for more than a little while.

For my money, anything between the top 20 and 100 would really spice things up.

We used to play Jimmy Loves Maryanne- Looking Glass, once in awhile on the Blue Moon rotation on the old Schaeffer/Cetec Analog and on the wizard until corporate tight ass programming took over. It was a neat and tidy little diddy that deserved some air play once in awhile.

I got a lot of those blue mooners on my IPOD.

Steve Alimo...Everyday I have to Cry Some.

Perry Como....Seattle

Boxtops....Neon Rainbow

Jonathon King..Everyone's gone to the Moon

The Intruders--'Cowboys to Girls' ( kind of a dippy song, but good for local color once in awhile )

Free Movement- 'Ive found someone of my own' (great song ! it deserved much better than it got of the radio biz )

I could go on, but maybe someone else can add to the list.

I don't want anyone to misunderstand my point on this: There are thousands of songs which people might recognize that either stalled on the charts or don't test well. They should NEVER be put into regular rotation. They should be put on the air once, taken away and(seemingly)never brought back. Properly promoted, SOME people will be constantly tuning to your station, afraid that if they don't, they might actually miss something they like! Can you say "CUME"?

"Herb, did you disagree with my post?"

I disagree strongly with your thought of not going deep with music from the top 40 through the top 100.

If one wishes to reach listeners from any given era and not play the same burned out old tunes you have several creative options to try to extend the life of these crispy critters:

-Covers of burned out tunes
-Live versions of burned out tunes
-Re-recorded studio versions/mixes of burned out tunes.

How much more refreshing to go deep with the occasional song that people might be vaguely familiar with, possibly even by artists that cranked out some other hits, but nonetheless are toe-tappers?

As an example, I far prefer the Ozark Mt. Daredevil's outstandingly beautiful and melodic "You Know Like I Know" (which I believe probably charted somewhere between 40 and 100) to the crispy critter "Jackie Blue." KLOO-FM knows of what I speak. Those guys aren't afraid to go deep. My hunch is that KLYC is half-way there as well.

Ya, different tracks or covers of ' the hits' work both ways IMHO. For example I have on my IPOD a different version, albeit very slight, of "Me and you and a Dog named Boo". The one I have has some slightly different orchestration punctuation in it and you can tell that the lyrics as sung are not as 'tight' and together as the top 40 version. Thats ok with me, still sounds like Lobo, which it is. I think it was still cut in 73' but was an intentional album track or a different track put on an album. I fI was programming an Oldies station , I would put in on a blue moon rotation with the original.

On the other hand, I had this PD on an Oldies Station about 4 years ago who was pretty young ( in more ways than just age ) to be programming an Oldies Station IMO. He downloaded a copy of Paul Mauriat's "Love is Blue" and put it on the automation via Selector. Now this version was a Paul Mauriat 'remake' done in 1972 ( I remember hearing it on some stations in Portland like KQFM or maybe KYXI !). It was really different than original , using more harpsichord with other strings and without that 'Wall of sound , sound in several bridging parts in the original version. So I let this 'thing' go on for a bit, before my head exploded one day. So I went to the PD and informed him that this was NOT an original version and sounded way to 'elevatorish' IMO and could we find the original version and if he couldnt I would be willing to find it SOMEWHERE for absolutely FREE ! So I did and he replaced it. So then he listened to it and admitted that it was a lot different and that it was "the hit" a good move to change it.

In response to Paul Walker, "Up in a Puff of Smoke" by Polly Brown, great song. She was from England, and in 1970 she was credited as "PicketyWitch" the song was called " That Same Old Feeling" on Janus Records. How about " Young Hearts Run Free" by Candi Staton, and to Kennewickman "Neon Rainbow" by the Box Tops, another great one. How about, Sweet Cream Ladies, you got to love these...

Oh Ya, forgot Sweet Creme Ladies...That song was a real 'out of the box' creation on the radio at a time when the Priscilla Goodbody censors were still all over the place. When I was in choir, we sang "Love Is Blue". I'll bet you didn't know it had words! I'll try to make this as short as possible: Most people prefer to hear their favorite songs and a great number equate "don't know" with "don't like". If you play songs that didn't even make the Top 40, there's a very good chance that most people won't know them. If you play a song that made the top 5 but hasn't been heard for 40 years, many people will recognize it and utter the words, "oh wow!". At least as many won't recognize it and utter something else! If you add too many of those songs to your regular rotation, 2 things will happen: Most people who recognized the song will grow tired of it and the people who never knew it in the first place, will say that the station plays the same songs over and over again! At this point, the second group is likely to sample your station less often or leave and never come back! The reason you're having a problem with this is that you(like everyone on this board)are not an average listener. My wife(despite being married to me)is an average listener: She turns on the radio on the way to and from work and listens to about 4 songs each way. If she hears ANYTHING she doesn't like, she changes the station! I have heard BIG hits that I haven't heard in years and asked her if she remembers them and she usually doesn't because it wasn't that important to her at the time and the songs have sat on the shelf for 30-40 years. By the way, why did Kool have "It's Raining Men" not only in regular rotation but also as a positioning statement? It wasn't a big hit(not even top 40)and no one else has played it since the 70s, which would indicate to me that it doesn't test well!

Aw c'mon. Whether it's Stella Artois or Stella Bohnsack, we're all a bit like Marlon Brando and love our Stella around here.

However, I must admit to going into Eve Fuller withdrawals. Her friendly and 'up' on-air presence is so great.

Eve's back and I'm sure glad!

Sure, this morning was a sunny weather day.
But hearing Eve's 'up' and perky voice after her return from Spring Break sure makes for a sunny Radio day as well.

..make that: 'eyes rolling heavenward,' Randy_in_eugene.

Don't worry, guys. Eve's husband and Mrs. Herb have nothing to worry about.

But I am a big fan of the station and their terrific employees. And you have to admit, if KLYC has an all-star lineup with Larry, Stella and Aaron..and I believe they do...then Eve is their superstar.

Seriously: Eve is pulling morning drive and often afternoon drive, as well. If anyone in Portland even attempted that, they'd be considered on a par with outstanding talent like Craig Walker, Bob Miller or Michael O'Brien.

Ya, Love is Blue has lyrics. If I remember correctly the lyrics were devised AFTER the original instrumental hit by Mauriat in 68'.

AS far as I know , Andy Williams had the most popular cover of the lyrical version along about 1972 or 3 I think it was. It got airplay on stations like KXL KYXI maybe KEX back then. My attitude is that on an Oldies station you should be playing the 'original versions' along with an occasional cover or remake of the same song, and only if there is some kind of 'worth' or justification in this version. And these versions programmed on a 'blue moon rotation'. And obviously worth and justification would be in the eyes of the beholder ie: the PD/MD. But how about lets play the original Top 40 version first and a bit more often than the lower charting and lesser familiar knock offs.

People like specific versions of songs, where they used to just like the song itself. Because of that, covers don't work very well anymore unless the cover is also a hit. Put another way, I like "Ticket to Ride" by the Beatles and also the Carpenters but I sure don't want to hear it by Frank Sinatra!

I've never met Mr. Bohnsack, but I like his LOCALLY OWNED Radio station.

Plenty of people bash the guy. But you have to admit that he's running one of the few remaining local stations with a decent signal....and in my view, a great playlist, to boot.

Anyone catch this morning's Political Cup of Coffee? I caught part of it and it was pretty good. They were talking about the endless effort of joining radio dispatch communications throughout Yamhill County and local communities.

"Herb is Larry Bohnsack!!"

I wish I had Mr. Bohnsack's Radio station. I'd get a website started, pronto, and feature my on-air staff, along with music and local news links.

Think of the value-added he could deliver to his advertisers. With radio and online promotional tie-ins to the yellow pages and local newspaper, KLYC would be a far-reaching empire. Next, he could generate his own magazine, kind of what JC Town is doing in Salem. Mr. Bohnsack could totally dominate Yamhill County media.

It sounds like Mr. Bohnsack has been negative in the past about expanding beyond his present airwaves. But he may be interested in examining his bountiful options were he to realize how much he could increase his slice of the pie. And best of all to a penurious manager like Mr. Bohnsack, he could do it all by parlaying his increased advertising revenues.

I won't flatter myself into believing he'd ever listen, but if he ever wants help from Ol' Herb, he's got it from this ardent KLYC fan.

I haven't thought about Marty Lancer in years. A great guy. I wonder what he's up too these days. When I left the "Open Line" talk show on KCYX (to go to KXL) Marty took over for awhile. I think he later took over PM drive and Ben Guiterrez took over the talk show. I sort of like the name "A Political Cup of Coffee," btw but we talked about a lot more than politics when I was there.

I dunno if it's time for Larry to retire or not, but the radio station per se needs to be handled by someone who's willing to make a financial and professional commitment to responsible broadcasting.

At the risk of catching heat, I gotta basically agree with what Herb said (09:15 4/3 post, above). The only addendum I'd make is that Bohnsack is not the guy who's going to make those changes (his history there has proven that) so it's time for someone responsible and forward-thinking to take the helm.

It's the old "lead, follow or get out of the way" story.

Anyone who listens to KLYC has to notice the great rapport between Eve Fuller and Thad Brill, a local stock broker.

As they did this morning, Eve and Thad always seem to have a great time on-air, with an upbeat and humourous approach.

Those two fun people should do a scheduled show together. Maybe a weekly 'magazine' type program, like 'Yamhill County Live' or 'Yamhill County Today.'

This is one statement that I certainly can't argue with--because it's true!!

But in the interest of stirring up controversy and starting a religious war on this board, who has the better on-air persona: Eve or Stella? About a week ago, Stella was talking about how the barbecue grill at her place still had the plastic covers on it but with the nice weather coming up, there might be some barbecuing going on at Casa de Bohnsack. I almost felt like I was about to be invited to this mouth-watering barbecue.

Do you understand Vern, that hiring somebody would mean putting more cash into the operation? Apparently you don't.

A small town station like KLYC can't often afford a news department that works into the late afternoon, whether it's owned by the Bohnsacks or not. Larry has proved he's not going to put money into the operation, so what makes you think he would now?

Quite frankly, there's no need for him to hire someone else to do afternoon news anyway. There's not enough news in the market and not enough income into the station to support such a move.
