Good for Charlie.

But what "big corporate radio giant" is buying AM's in small towns? Most are selling.

Who is Charlie Fox and why should we care about him being on the air in Salem?

Is Bicoastal buying 103.7, and moving to studios to Salem? Could it become the new KIQY? :-)

103.7 is in limbo until the final resolution of MB 05-10. If it goes through, KHPE will end up on 103.7 and KXPC will be out in the middle of nowhere!

Charlie Foxx...met him while we were both going to OSU...he went to KBZY shortly after and was there for many years in the early 70's before heading off to other valley stations.

Probably doesn't remember me; we were like your proverbial radio ships passing in the night. But Charlie (also knew him as "Mike Shannon") and I worked together at KBZY in 1971. Or, rather, my father did; he used to tell me stories about the old days of radio.

It was a golden era in a way (certainly, eh, different), whether we knew it or not, despite the long hours and very, very short pay. It was fun. It was "live and local," when that wasn't just a liner or an illusion.

It almost makes me a little misty-eyed (hate it when that happens -- nostalgia isn't what it used to be) when I contemplate how young we were, how our whole lives, our brilliant careers in broadcasting, stretched out before us: the possibilities were limitless.

Charlie/Mike/Dave and I wound up on the same staff together one more time many years later at the unfortunate incarnation of KSND in Salem back in early 2004...for about ten minutes for the majority of us; the vibes just weren't right. Charlie, though, was there for years.

Along with some other good people, among them a kind gentleman named Carly Widing (the PD), the talented and always hardworking "Dodger," the wacky, irrepressible Steve Lindsley, and numerous other fine folks, spearheaded by the warmth, wit and wonder of Ernie Hopseker, station owner and engineer of engineers, not to mention a GM of legend and genius, Sam Phillips, it was the best of times, it was the... And that sentence was way too long and that's why I'm fired. Actually Sam Phillips handed me one of my better severance checks, so warm regards and remembrance of Sam (and Ernie, of course).

But I digress, strolling down the dreaded and treacherous memory lane; I apologize.

Hats off and best wishes to that indestructible announcing machine and Boss Jock (like they don't make 'em anymore) Charlie Fox, He, truly, is one of the last of a vanishing breed.

Jeffrey,
Many things have been said about me ("What the hell is wrong with him" the most used) but I don't think I've ever been called "wacky." Charlie is one of the genuinely nice people I've met in my 30 years and I, too, hope good things for him. Boy, that KSND cast WAS memorable, wasn't it.

uh oh, I knew this would happen!
Only I figured it would be me bringing it up.
Glad to hear from you Jeffrey!
You to Steve.
Charlie/Dave/Micheal, good luck to you, keep your pipes tuned!
