I doubt you would hear any coverage on the radio today. There's no one in any of the studios to do it.

KEX did a nice multi-cut piece in the noon. KGW carried live, bet the PGA fans loved that.

Well I hate to jump to conclusions, but saw no one in the media area from Radio at the Eugene speech....At Obama there were KLCC folks and someone from a coastal station, and myself from Roseburg. Today it appeared our station in Roseburg was the only radio presence at the event, unless there were KLCC folks I didn't recognize. Radio news is shooting itself in the foot by not covering these major events and sending the audience to TV and print. For an industry clearly not experiencing the best of times, Radio needs to hustle a bit more!

Down in KFalls, we didn't get too excited about either H or O and their "press appearances" as it's more of a conservative neighborhood in these parts. Heck, we're not even that thrilled about McCain.

The problem I see as a whole with the media, especially TV and print, is it's too liberal based and gets WAY to excited about Obama. Fox, CNN and the local rags love to paint a bunch of pictures of "peace, love and happiness" throughout the land through "unity" of a possible new young leader, or the "victim" angle of a senator who tends to cry when not getting her way. The coverage our media outlets give those two is rediculous.

For example, President Bush and Russian President Putin (soon to be Russian Prime Minister, yes the new president will be just a puppet) just had a mutual press conference today around 3am our time, as it was 2pm in the afternoon in Moskva. (I speak Russian, and that's actually what the name of the city is.) The reason for their big powwow is because Russia doesn't want Europe to have a defensive missle bubble from the US as it appears to be going more Cold War thinking, so they are meeting on this.

I'll give credit to Fox for at least running the full coverage, but disappointed later this morning as I noticed their quick snippets about it. However, there was plenty of lengthy info on what Obama and Hillary were doing.

This is a prime example. On the average, our press treats Hillary and Obama with as much wasted coverage on the wrong things, as if they were Paris Hilton and Brad or Angelina on TMZ, Entertainment tonight or the other junk.

I agree with you Kkb, radio is S L O W to the race track, and we're going to get bucked off in a bad way if we don't get it together. The only time I see radio faster is when it comes to school closures, or traffic updates, because we can stop in an instant with any programming, and report it, then still get back to what we were doing before.

It's also funny how much the audience does love radio MORE than TV when they need their special fix of music, sports or talk, plus their car wash mentioned, their dog found, their kids big game info, etc.

Radio is still a great free service and goes anywhwere within line of sight and then some. But if we want to compete with the other avenues, we have to report information faster and better than the other avenues.

Kahtik,
Your right-wing ideology is coming through in your post. I hope it does not affect you objectivity when writing your news or selecting your stories. I think that is an issue in small, conservative markets although I don't have any empirical evidence on it.

Well Roseburg is certainly no left wing stronghold either...and we run Rush and Lars on KQEN - our N/T/S station.....but a presidential candidate an hour away is worth covering regardless of their politics... Ironically right after I posted last night, I saw that KQEN's news coverage won several AP awards....I hadn't talked to the News Dir yet so only knew about a couple announced in advance.

"unless there were KLCC folks I didn't recognize."

KLCC is running the speech right now! It started at noon, after "Mist covered Mountain".

Tomedwards, it would be more of an independent ideology, as I've been registered that way for many, many years. Not to worry, it doesn't affect my news writing, which I haven't had to do too much of lately. I'm glad as I have a huge respect for GREAT news bodies. Heck, the last time I really was doing a lot of it was in 2002 when KVAN asked me to jump on board full time doing news, but naw, I know there's better. I'm more of a music person, but like to play quarterback when I've got a great team ready to win. It's the sports player in me.

Kkb, you're right about Roseburg. My influences for my younger age where bouncing between the cities of Portland and a little ol' area southwest of Dreadford, I mean Jacksonville, no even farther, so I've enjoyed it all.

I'm not one for handouts, unless it's some golf trade from a GM. :-):-)

The point of this blog was and is Hillary Coverage right? I still think there is too much Hillary coverage.

OK, gotta go... the sniper fire is coming in and there's no time for a welcoming committee, so I'm running for the vehicle. ;) If I can get back in time, I'll be sure to put a no ceiling limit on health care costs out of my paycheck. ;)

I agree with some of Kahtik's criticism but I don't think the problem is necessarily ideological. (In fact, I think the "liberal bias" of the media is pretty much a myth) It seems to me that most news directors are looking for an exciting narrative on which to pin the story and the Obama/Clinton race fits the bill. My main problem with that is that it skews so much of the coverage into the "horse race" between the candidates rather than coverage of the issues. It was the same situation back in 2000 when McCain won New Hampshire and challenged Bush for the Republican nomination.
