Heads up to those concerned with age discrimination in broadcasting: Former Entercom Kansas City morning show team is suing the company for wrongful termination. Max Floyd hired me into the business a long time ago so I'm curious to see how it turns out. He and his former morning show partner were recently interviewed by John Stossel for an upcoming 20/20 piece. Watch for it.

Had lunch with two other old guys yesterday, Bill Gardner, late of KOOL Phoenix, and John Sebastian, late of Cumulus/Dallas. We agreed that there is a trend towards getting rid of people starting when they hit their mid-fifties.
Whether it's money or our best days have passed us by we don't know. But we did agree on one thing...none of us are done yet.

Howdy Iris!

I really miss playing footsie with you between our two desks while Bonnie was painfully placing every single song by hand!

I am well. Just waiting for my rebate check so I can go buy half a tank of gas.

"trend towards getting rid of people starting when they hit their mid-fifties.
Whether it's money or our best days have passed"

It's money.

I count the blessings.

K2 downsized me at age 43 after 10 years of service. Gave me a years salary and a nice letter of recommendation for my dart board (it's been replaced by one of Cheney). One morning years later I couldn't help but smile (something I haven't been doing enough of lately) when I read how the GM that downsized me (and 20 others that day) got downsized himself. Who says there is no justice?

In the morning when I wake up and listen to the sound
Of the birds outside on the roof
I try to ignore what the paper says
And I try not to read all the news
And I'll hold you if you had a bad dream
And I hope it never comes true
'Cause you and I been through so many things together
And the sun starts climbing the roof

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay ~ N. Young

Charlie. You're still young enough that you really ought to respond to emails...unless you have mine classified as junk.

Whatever happened to Kanab? I've been reading Edward Abbey lately. I've applied for a handgun license and have resumed throwing my empty beer cans out the window while I'm driving. (The highway is what's ugly!)

How's the family? How's Ken D.? When will KLOO start streaming so I can listen?

Ta Ta!

Ya, I was 55 when they furlowed me , in a wishy washy way that really wasnt a termination. It definately wasnt money. I think it might have been my hair thinning, spectacled, portly image on remotes that might have been the final straw for them.

And the young PD I worked for was a little put back when several months earlier I told him that I might need a day to recover after a scheduled Colonoscopy, depending upon how 'everything came out ' you know. Well, he looked rather disgusted that 'he ' of all people had to put up with 'his radio people' making such ridiculous requests.

Yeah, I could have sued over Colon inspection discrimination.

It's sad that by the time people have gained some perspective on life, and the experience to communicate about it, they get jerked off the air. Maybe us old geezers are making too much sense in a world now ruled by senselessness.

Speaking of "Geezers"....who is the grand old dude of Oregon radio these days? My nomination for longevity is Bob Spangler still doing mornings at 1310 KNPT-Newport after all these years. Bob has been at the station for over 50 years. He's funny, irreverent at times, and just one helluva good guy. I am proud to be working down the hall from Bob. And he still kicks ass with a large portion of the morning audience.

The industry wants to get rid of all the old guys who might remember what radio should still be like.

There are far too many Retards in radio, especially in management.
Companies know that the inexperienced newbies will put up with these dopes in management. The seasoned pros won't put up with it, and will make a stink, which is why companies don't want them around.

Hey Bill,
I remember when we hung out with Max...was it New Orleans or Dallas? I think it was Dallas, Captain Kangaroo was New Orleans. Oh...the stories. Is the bar on the patio still open??

BabyBoomers trying to make it in Today's radio are finding it a lot harder to find employment. Possible employers think we can't attract the younger buying public or we don't relate. And heaven forbid we make a public appearance where someone will see that we "sound" younger then we look! We can't stop them from hiring youthful dj's, heck I'm 53....I just know that someday the powers that be will be old too, then we'll see who's trying to put on Depends in the dark, adhesive side up...

You Know You're Getting Old When...

Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service.
Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
Your back goes out more than you do.
The twinkle in your eye is only the reflection of the sun on your bifocals.
You feel like the morning after when you haven't been anywhere the night before.
You finally got your head together, now your body is falling apart.
Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.
You wake up with that morning-after feeling and you didn't do anything the night before.
You don't care where your wife goes, just so you don't have to go along.
It takes twice as long to look half as good.
Many of your co-workers were born the same year that you got your last promotion.
People call at 9 PM and ask, "Did I wake you?"
You can live without sex but not without glasses.

Joe...I didn't get your email. I'll email you.
Craig...yes, the Patio Bar opens each and every afternoon at 4. Come on down! Snowbirds are leaving, heading back to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Bob...why did you even respond to this thread? You're only 42! (Bob's had a hard life.)
Everybody should check johnrook.com for the video intro to Lujack's NAB induction this spring.
