At least those jammin kids can say goodbye on the air to their listening audience since their last day will be on the 12th.

Most jocks don't get a chance to say goodbye to their audience, now it looks like the Jammin jocks will have that opportunity to.

Anybody listening to Jammin tonight? I wonder if they are talking about this on the air or not? I'm sure the Playhouse will be. I may actually listen to the Playhouse Tomorrow morning to see how they are sounding. Its gotta be weird going on the air, and knowing that your last day is the 12th.

There is one really good thing about this: We know that the last Playhouse show will be May 9....Time to do some aircheck recording!!!

This may also mean that we will be back to having two FM stations that broadcast in mono (formerly, KTRO-FM was mono).

I heard a little bit of The Playhouse this morning, just outta curiosity... The very definition of crappy radio! Some dude screaming like a pro rassler, and the other dude generally being his yes-man.

Good thing that The "Jungle" is returning to Portland!

War sports-talk... Out! :-)

Isn't the Playhous in syndication? Won't they just be picked up somewhere else? Jim Rome is a sports talk god but just as the point has been made about Rush Limbaugh...do we really have to hear Jim Rome on 3 + stations???

The station changes on May 12th. The previous Friday would be the 9th. Assuming we're talking about this market, isn't Rush Limbaugh ONLY on KEX and Jim Rome ONLY on The Game? How can The Playhouse say goodbye to their listeners if they're in syndication?

The Playhouse is in syndication, but Jammin has always been their "base of operations", so whether they move studios, or switch stations in the Portland market remains to be seen. In the 5 minutes or so that I listened this morning, P.K. mentioned that "something was going on", but he couldn't talk about it until Wednesday at 7:30am, for some reason. Probably legal.

Also, who says that 95.5 will be broadcasting in Mono? I know for a fact that Blazer and Duck games are fed in stereo, plus I'm sure that Fox Sports has stereo feeds. Why would they go mono?

OK...I guess that the format flip could occur at any time during Monday May 12. However, doesn't it seem a lot more likely that a program that runs Monday-Friday would have its last episode on a Friday?

I'm not guaranteeing that they would broadcast in mono, but it seems like something they might consider. Broadcasting in FM Stereo causes a very significant increase in background hiss for listeners in fringe areas over broadcasting in mono. This was why the former KTRO-FM and KPDQ-FM went mono.

On Monday, May 12th at 9 a.m., Portland will become one of the rare major U.S. markets to boast an all-sports station on the FM dial when Rose City Radio launches 95.5 The Game.

So my guess is that The Playhouse's last show will be on Monday the 12th... and the flip will take place after their show at 9:00am.

...OK Then, May 12 is the day to record airchecks, not May 9.

According to a story that might have been in the Oregonian (or it might have been on an industry website), KXL management is resentful that they launched KXL-AM's website as early as they did. They said that their experience was that until recently, the website did not help the station in any measurable way. Thus, they have adopted a policy of being cautious about being early technical adopters just for the sake of being able to say that they were first. Therefore, I am not expecting HD on 95.5 until multicasting becomes profitable or average listeners start demanding HD.

Why advertise the change on Jammin? Their listeners aren't going to stay there for sports. They want their ....whatever you call it.... That is why they listen to 95.5. When that leaves that station, so will they.

What on earth, in a play by play, does stereo do for it. One commentator on left and one on right? Put up mikes to pick up background in stereo?

What good is talk in stereo? None. Except for the commercials maybe. Yeah, better frequency response than on AM but stereo???

Actually I don't care. I haven't listened to 95.5 since they went hip hop. I won't be listening after they change, either. Don't listen to 1080, either. Sports talk just doesn't interest me.

Jimbo: Have you ever heard a sports play-by-play game in stereo. The announcers are in the center; but when the audience is mic'd properly, it adds an incredible depth to the sound and brings the game alive. It's very exciting.

Totally agreed on the stereo bit. Love sports games aired that way.

(crosses fingers that we get it, and not MONO)

As for the listeners not doing sports, are you kidding?

Lots of people like sports. If the production is good, they are gonna check it out.

Jimbo: I wonder why you even posted this at all, if you have no interest in the product or the end result. You claimed to not understand the need for stereo sports programming, yet then you admitted you don't listen to and have no interest in sports programming.

You sound like you just wanted to read your name on the screen and feel relevant. Well, it failed.

Hey Chris, you can beat up on me, too. I was a big fan of the KINK-like AAA format on 95.5, but I didn't care much for Jammin' 95.5 (I listened to it only sparingly during its early days), and I don't have any interest in sports unless the sports are an excuse to throw a party and drink....BUT, I am a fan of the medium of radio, and I like to watch how the format changes are executed, even if the end result is not something that I am going to listen to day in and out.

When I was doing college radio, we had a stereo feed for the hockey arena crowd mics. It was a nice add-on to the hockey broadcasts. In a perfect world, I would hope that the board operator could throw a switch to turn on the stereo pilot and subcarrier only during the sports play-by-play programs that are produced in stereo. However, in the world of 2008, I realize that this is not feasible, and the stereo is either going to have to be left on or left off. Leave it on and some of the play-by-play programming will benefit but the call-in sports analysis shows won't (as far as I know, the only syndicated call-in programs that are delivered on a stereo feed are on NPR-those people have money to burn). Leave it off, and the play-by-play won't sound as lively, but the station will save themselves from having to take a signal-to-noise ratio hit.

95.5 has some of the best audio processing in the market, and it's a real shame that it's going to be wasted on Talk programming! 107.5 doesn't compare, in terms of audio processing quality.

Alfredo_t,

The AAA format on KXL-FM didn't work at all. Portland doesn't need another AAA format since KINK-FM is doing very well.

Second, Portland is not a sports town, but I think 95.5 the Game will do better than the Fan. With more local sporting events and better talk shows, it can be successful. However, I don't see the Game hitting a 4.0 and more rating in the 12+ group. Most sports radio stations average about a 2.0 rating, but the main focus are male demos.

Third, like it or not, CHR/Rhythmic will return to the Portland market.

The Dallas Cowboys do a stereo feed of all games, and have a lot of FM's among their affiliates. I heard a game on an FM in Waco last fall, and it sounded awesome. They actually let the sound from those parabolic mics you see on the sidelines be the stars. And on long plays, the sound did flow from right to left or the opposite.
The Cowboys can do with by virtue of producing the entire game, from pre-game open to post-game billboard, out of the press box. They even bring their own flyaway uplink on the road.

All of this being done because of Lars and Michael Savage. There wasn't a "fit" there to have The U of O and the Blazers on KXL with Lars and his buddy, the Blazers were having a hard time getting advertisers on board because of the knuckleheads.

So instead of Baby James Derby getting Lars back to the way he was prior to 2000 he sacraficed Jammin 95.5 to become a 24/7 Sports Station.

Like that's going to work, KFXX has never pulled above a 2.0 share. The hope with the sports side of KXL away from the radical right talk radio all will be fine. Dream on. And to think nobody's head is going to roll for this bad choice.

In addition Katie "I use to be a Weather Girl" Brown doing sports is totally unforgivable. Her current sports reports are now just ESPN lite, plagerizing terms used on ESPN. How much time does she spend on research? Well she probably spends more time choosing the make-up that she will wear that day.

Isn't Vanity one of the Seven Deadly sins? Seems KXL is willing to commit this Sin among others.

Cleveland Browns football games are all done in Stereo as well.

Still think they should have changed the name. The new Browns don't respect the history of the team, deaspite the best efforts of ownership to make it happen. Still follow the team, but there is indeed something missing.
