Does anyone remember the original address of KSWB when it signed on 930kc in 1968? The Broadcasting Yearbook only lists a P.O. Box. The only address I've found is: 615 Broadway #202. If I remember correctly, wasn't it in a stand alone building that looked like a little house with the calls on it. The address above suggests it's in an office building. Here's a memory flogger for old "Radio 93" fans:

Craig, contact Jerry Dennon. He was the owner of the station when it went on the air, as I remember.

It was in that stand along house for many years Craig. It was still there in '98 I think, when I did a handful of basketball games for them. Aren't their studios in Astoria now?

Remember driving through Seaside back in the 80's and tuning into the station at 840 I believe. The modulation was so low I started picking up the station just a couple of miles from the city if that. Wondered how anyone listened.

I lived on the North Coast from 1985 to 1993, and recall that KSWB was located next to the Seaside Public Library on Broadway, which is what Highway 101 is called in that part of town.

My earliest recollection of KSWB is when I was a kid growing up in Seattle and our family was vacationing on the coast in the late 1960s. We would go into stores in Seaside and hear the station in the background. I remember its jingle was to the old tune, "By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Beautiful Sea," but the lyrics were changed to "By the Sea, By the Sea, K-S-W-B." Catchy.

As I recall The Brothers Four were also part owners with Jerry Dennon of the station. Jerry is still alive and kicking with his Jerden/Soundworks operation. He releases a lot of spoken word cds, historical stuff, etc for which there is a strong market. Plus he still makes available all those old 60s Jerden rock/pop releases. I have known Jerry for many years and my first rock band was actually signed to Jerden. And I have the old royalty checks to prove it. Yeahh Baby!!

I gave him the Portland Radio Guide site hoping he would post on here. I think I found a phone number for him which I will try tomorrow also.

I think Jerry told me one time that his family was from Seaside.

The KSWB jingle reminds me of something: From what I heard, at one time, KABL used the first 4 notes of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" and KNEW used the next 5. I thought Broadway was the road that went to the turnaround and why does Broad Street sound familiar?

Craig said: Did your band have a 45 out on Jerden? What was the bands name?
________________________________________________
The band was named The Legendary Beachcombers and we had three singles released on Jerden between late '63 and late '65. Chinese Bagpiper/Purple Peanuts, The Wheeley/Tossin & Turning, and All To Pieces, the final single released just before we crashed our touring van coming home from a summertime gig at Lake Chelan. Talk about prophetic! We got a lot of NW radio airplay and played gigs in WA, OR, ID and MT...we did about 125 gigs a year. And we did have some pretty good sales on the first two singles. And contrary to popular belief, Jerry even sent us royalty checks. Those were fun times for radio and music and bands. And most of the old NW music on Jerden is now available world-wide thru licensing deals Jerry mad with many international labels. Lovn Live That NW Rock And Roll!!!

As I recall, the jingle was "93, by the sea, KSWB" (with a sustained 'B'), by the Brothers Four, who had some ownership in the station when it signed on around May-June 1968 (I lived in Astoria then). I recall that some of the partners at KSWB had some kind of ownership of KAST before it was bought by GM Bob Chopping

Shipwreck: That's great you would remember so much detail. I'll sure make a note of that.

Jerry Dennon contacted me and has some additional details and insight. I asked him if I could post his E-Mail and he gave me the ok:
______________________________________________________________

Craig... Brian Lord contacted me earlier today and "turned me onto" the Portland Radio Message Board. Rather than try to sort out how to "do that", may I indulge myself by making a few comments on items posted and send them to your attention?

First of all, even though I have lived in Seattle since 1959 (with a time-out for Hollywood along the way), I still consider myself an Oregonian and started in broadcasting in 1956 at KOIN-AM-FM-TV after dropping out of college. I have a lot of cool Portland stories in my memories, but let me focus on KSWB and to the items posted:

KSWB started in the summer of 1968 and was in its own free standing building on Holladay Drive. The building was custom built for the station and it was a cool little operation. It also had a PO Box: I believe it was P O Box 93, Seaside, OR 97138. My partners in the station from the get-go were the members of the singing group, The Brothers Four. We were all good friends and lived in Seattle at the time. And we both had fulltime careers in the music industry going. (As a footnote, Bob Flick, one of the Brothers, just married on May 14 "WKRP" star Loni Anderson; Bob is 69 and Loni 62.) ...

I started Jerden Records in Seattle in 1960; Jerden still exists today but as a label that is part of our company, SoundWorks, which specializes in spoken word in DVD and CD format; you can check us out at: jerden@aol.com ... I am also a media broker; now in my 25th year of biz and the firm is known as "Montcalm" and is Bainbridge Island based ...

I originally filed with the FCC for 730 for KSWB; however Les Smith and his folks at KXL in Portland "protested" conflicts inasmuch as he owned KXL on 750. Les nicely picked up all of the legal and engineering costs and we moved to 930. The change to 840 came after our ownership; we sold the station in late 1971 to Ken Karge, Sam Kirkaldie and another partner from Glasgow, Montana ...

I was born in Astoria; raised in Cannon Beach and Seaside; I am a SHS grad, class of '55 ... Hence the reason KSWB exists today ... Trivia: The Brothers Four recorded custom "jingles" for KSWB that were used during our ownership ... Dick Curtis of Seattle radio legend, recorded a lot of news voice intro tracks for us that were used for years there. ... we signed off each broadcast day with The Brothers Four Columbia recording, "What Now My Love".

More than you ever wanted to know.
All the best...
Jerry

Is that the same Dick Curtis that gained quite a bit of noteriety as the Oregon Border Patrol guy in the Blitz-Weinhard beer ads? "Where you boys goin' with all that beer?" He also had a locally produced variety show on KPTV for awhile.

Wow, great memories from Jerry Dennon. Now let's see if my memory is right, I recall the station signing off with the Mitch Ryder rendition of "What Now My Love" after the sign-off announcement that included "sorry, but the government won't let us (stay on later)".

When I first started working at KHOK Radio in Hoquiam, WA in 1961 it was a daytimer too and we signed off every night with "Shake It Up" by Paul Revere and The Raiders. Real rock n roll, that song just kicked butt from the opening electric piano riff to the fade with Mark Lindsey just screaming his lungs out.

Dick Curtis and Pat O'Day were partners in the NW dance circuit that helped build the Oregon-Washington music business.

Dick Curtis was an absolutely fabulous KJR DJ and great at delivering News/Traffic and making them sound immediate & compelling...not an interruption.

Curtis was my PD and later GM while I PD'ed KOL-Seattle.

I know for a fact he didn't have a show on KPTV. He was too busy touring with Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, and Led Zeppelin as a key player in Concerts West.

When I was checking my audio archives recently, I came across an audio snippet of Curtis delivering one of those Produced Liners Jerry Dennon mentioned on KSWB.

Ah, Shipwreck. I remember the "Sorry, but the government won't let us" sign-off, too. Only heard it once, but it stuck in my mind because it seemed unusual.

I didn't live there, but heard it when attending a high school game, which puts it in 1969-71. I couldn't recall which station it was, just that it was in Astoria.

Yes, I believe KSWB was at 930 on old station listings I had for Oregon.

I don't think the studios are located on Hwy 101 north of Broadway anymore, but I could be mistaken. Last I heard the actual station, it was "840 Gold" playing "Sunny" standards.

840 is a US clear channel. Before they broke up the clears, there was usually only 1 station on a clear channel at night, in this case, WHAS Louisville, Kentucky. I'm not familiar with the particulars but am guessing that KSWB was able to produce a decent nighttime signal, using a single tower on 84 whereas it would have required a carefully thought out directional array on 930, which may have been cost prohibitive and possibly out of the question.
