Son of a...

Rockfest used to mean a kick ass rock show.

Next year it'll be Coldplay or The Jonas Brothers

Kid rock isn't much of a rocker. His new single "all summer long" is played on top 40 stations right next to the Jonas brothers. Its a bit odd they are bringing Kid Rock. This might be a new low for the Rock fest.
This is too bad because KUFO has been sounding so good lately, musically.
I heard Kid Rocks new single On Ryan Seacrest's top 40 countdown.
HOW SAD!

This reminds me of the year Cypress Hill was the headliner of NRK's Big Stink. I didn't attend, but I think that was the year there was a problem with a propane tank at the concert site and the entire event was shut down and evacuated.

I've noticed over the years that Portland is the kind of market that, except for major tours which sometimes schedule 1 Portland date between Seattle and LA, tends to get major performers only when they are on their way up, or on their way down. I stumbled upon a double meaning here: I do mean both "on their way up, or way down" in the metaphorical sense of popularity, and, as I just noticed, in the very real sense of of traveling up or down between Seattle and LA.

There are of course some exceptions, but these station shows aren't like the K-Rock shows of New York. A notable exception would be Godsmack at RockFest 2002.

Wait... I think it was actually RockFest 2001 where Godsmack headlined. As I recall, 2002 had two Rockfest shows, the second one being "Rockfest 7.5- Mayhem at the Meadows!"

There's a combination in what makes a station's Summer Concert a success. To the public it's the artist's who perform. To the station it's generating enough funds to pay for the event and make a profit.

The Station Mgr/PD will use their favors with the labels to get a particular artist who's new release coincides with the Summer Concert. The station may or may not pay the artist at a discounted performance rate. No matter what, sales staff NEEDS to sell sponsorships to their advertisers to pay for the artist and event.

So, unless a station has a large budget dedicated to hiring an artist of choice per the stations format, you'll see someone great. But, since every station's budget is basically gone, they'll rely on sponsorship money and cross promotion between Station and record label to get whatever artist that is in the format or even outside it, such as Kid Rock or as mentioned Cypress Hill.

NewFlyer:
Yes, you're right that NRK Big Stink was shut down towards the end due to a propane tank leak. That was the event I brought Tommy Chong in which he introduced Cypress Hill and other acts (Good Charlotte) with Art Alexakis. Ahhh Summer Concerts.

WOW! Is all I can say. I want to tune in now to KUFO just to see how the stations personalities sell and promote this show to listener's. Then I wanna be a fly on the wall in the studio to see what the stations personalities are really saying about the stations choice of headliner when they aren't on air.

How is Kid Rock not relevant to KUFO? He's had rock hits, and his current single is being pushed on Active Rock as well as other formats. It's called a crossover. In fact, it's in rotation on KUFO. Just because you don't like Kid Rock doesn't mean he doesn't fit a KUFO show.

Yup he is now trying to get teenage girls to buy his music. I would think he fits a Z100 show more than a Rockfest. I heard some of the jocks on KUFO making fun of Chris Cornell's new cd because Ryan Seacrest is playing it on his show. Well Kid Rock is all over Ryan Seacrest show and on Ryan Seacrests Top 40 countdown. Doesn't sound very rockish to me. But if Kufo is trying to get more females to listen to their station, than mission accomplished.
And I guess if you like a song that rips off two classic rock songs
Werewolves in London and "sweethome Alabama" than more power to ya. Infact I think Z100 is currently playing his new single also, along with the Jonas brothers and Miley Cirus.

I have an idea, Maybe KUFO could get Ryan Seacrest to introduce Kid Rock live onstage at the Rockfest this year.

Kid Rock's release was to Rock, then CHR, and now, sorry to say, Country. Well, the latter has been for just a few weeks less than the rest. I'm avoiding it if at all possible, as I'm betting it's burn factor through research will be very quick. Already bet a dinner on it.

Hey, I'm glad to hear that Rockfest still goes, as I believe CBS's sister Countryfest was cut some years back.

Memory flash, I think it was Rockfest '98, when the Harley was dumped going up the ramp to the stage at Portland Meadows. :-):-):-) Yes, those were the days. :-)

Radio can be a blast at times!

At least Kufo is still doing Rockfest, even if they do have a crappy headliner!

Look at Z100 they got rid of The Last Chance Summer Dance a few years back. Those cheap asses at Clear Channel didn't want to spend the money on the summer concert that they have been doing for 20 years. That concert used to draw THOUSANDS of listeners!

Well OF COURSE they're playing his single, he's their headliner! Although I do agree that Kid Rock will bring in the Camaro drivers that are fans of him and KUFO. I don't think KUFO and KR are strange bedfellows. When I worked there, we played him all the time.

Kid Rocks latest track is testing and reacting well for us here at 98 Rock in Sacramento. I think if they add another group or two, the show should be fine. Not sure how the ticket sales typically do for rock shows in PDX though.

At the 50th Anniversary Grammy Show in February of this year, Kid Rock was an embarrassment.

He was singing a duet of "That Old Black Magic" with Keely Smith, who won the first Grammy back in the day. Here was this 75 year-old, legendary songstress, carrying a 37 year-old who didn't bother to learn the song. Compare that to the work 27 year-old Alicia Keys put in on her "duet" with Frank Sinatra.

IMO, it speaks volumes about his work ethic and pride as a performer, no matter the genre or venue.

Tom Parker hit the nail on the head. Kid Rock is an embarrassment. He's an awful singer,he can't rap, which hasn't stoped him from trying. Kid Rock is like Nickelback, he is selling albums but I have yet to know anybody who actually buys or listens to Kid Rock albums.

Kid rock has no musical integrity at all. I bet Getting laid and smoking dope is Priority number one, putting out a great rock record is the last thing he cares about.
Titles of songs like "american Badass" and "Bawidtaba" pretty much sum up his talent.

I don't know if this was a mistake on someone's part, but I just heard a Rockfest promo on... 106.7. No mention of KUFO in the promo.

What's next, ads for Spanish-language artists on English stations?!

Dear Tom Parker,
Im writing you this letter to let you know that I bought you the new Kid Rock cd for your birthday. From your last post, I take it that you are not a fan of Kid or should I say Mr. Rock. It was a 50/50 toss up between Kid Rock or Yanni, and I thought you would enjoy Kid Rock. As you know, he is the american badass!
Hopefully you can take the cd back, or perhaps Terry Danner might like it.

Lots of Love, and I apologise in advance for thinking that you were a true Kid Rock Fan.

Sincerely,
Buns of Steel

Dear Buns,

Thanks so much for the kind gift. Would you mind if I traded it for a CD of Kid Rock doing a duet with Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute?

Send Ms. Danner Roger Whittaker's Greatest Hit(s) and we'll all be tickled pink.

Your pal,
TP

Kid Rock...Great hair? Not even a bald man would envy those greasy locks. Now, what you should of acknowledged is how he can sport a white under shirt tank top, or as Kid calls it his 'Wife Beater-T'.

Those wife beater shirts that kid wears are awesome. Im just wondering if the Yellow stain on his wiife beaters came with the shirt or its a urine/liquuer/tobacco stain.
