Well that didn't take long did it? It may have been too big a workload for Katy.

How well is the "The Game" billing?

I liked Kenny & Katy's show. They got a pretty quick "hook", IMHO. Nothing wrong with Gavin, though.

Maybe Katy begged off... 3 television sportscasts spread thru the day and night, and a 3-hour early-morning radio show plus prep time, not a lot of time for sleep.

IMHO, Katy didn't bring much depth to the program. The management at Rose City wanted man v. woman and it failed. I don't know where the data came from, but the feeling was there.

Kenny is a good support person. He is also a very good print reporter. That requires insight and analysis. I would keep him for that; plus he has a good sense of humor and doesn't take himself seriously.

Has Kenny Vance been let go or has he been reassigned within The Game? Who will replace Gavin Dawson at 6 p.m.?

According to Brian Wheeler:
Chad Doing will be Gavin's sidekick in the morning.
Wheeler's show expands to 2 hours, and Kenny will be on that show sometimes.

I think they should have simply replaced Katy with Gavin. That would be a good show - Gavin & Kenny.

My questions is, are these people engaging? Do they entertain as personalities? Or are they all sports? Shows in Dallas on the Ticket (KTCK) go beyond sports and become guy talk, which is very engaging, same with other sports programming around the country do the same. Just curious.

"Guy talk" is only engaging to young "guys". It can get pretty old pretty quick. And The Game was actually promoting the fact that they were emphasizing local sports, and didn't do much "guy talk" like KFXX did. So, they better tread lightly on that.

Gavin is great when he sticks to sports, especially Blazers. I know he's young, and appeals to a certain segment when he goes into the "La Familia" and "Peoples Champ" mode, but in the morning, that won't work as well. He's got a great voice, and he knows sports, so he should go with those strengths. My opinion of course.

Arent "young guys" the audience The Game wants to attract? Isnt that the audience that the advertisers want? Young, impressionable men with extra $$$ to spend... not old married men who are set in their ways and saving for retirement. :-)

Yes Ness, you are right. And I knew that when I typed it. If that's who they are targeting, then they shouldn't criticize other stations that aim the same way. Say "we do it better".

Anyhow, my hope is that Gavin will get more serious sports-wise when he moves to mornings. Give Ranting Colin a real run.

Listened to Gavin's first effort this morning...

Let's hope can demonstrate more "game" than he did today. Not very entertaining at all.

Katy doesn't no anything about sports, she just started as the "Weather Girl" who took over sports after Arena hit the road. I know more in my little pinkie about sports, but I have better things to do with my life.

(PS Farve had to come back, Green Bay had agreed to pay $12 million over two years when he retired which was the amount left on his contract, and that amount could then be used for other players and not count towards the salary cap. So when Farve asked to be traded his current contract would have counted to the salary cap. So they tried to make up a job so they could have the money for the cap.

But Rodgers couldn't close the deal. He has not shown himself to be a leader so they needed to keep Farve in the fold and so he's back.

Did Katy know any of this no.)

So why did Rose City Radio make 95.5 the sports station? Well James Derby has made KXL-AM the right wing nut job station that represents his personal views. Heat was coming from the Vulcan Organization as complaints to advertisers of the Blazers were huge as some of the Blazer advertising was showing up on the "Right Wing" talk shows, and those advertisers did not want to happen and were reducing their ad buys with the Blazers and the Ducks.

Rather than Derby toning down the Right Wing talkers and keeping the Ducks and the Blazers on KXL he and Jay Allen felt they had the expertise to start a All Sports Talk Station in Portland.

Within a year the ratings will show the two have no expertise. They should be shown the door along with Tim McNamara who still doesn't know how to run a station, as he handed to much off to James Derby as it appears he is more interested in retiring than doing his job as the station manager.

Derby is over his head. He is not an effective manager because he lacks empathy when dealing with people. Why Jay Allen is included this is beyond me. Both Derby and Allen are not very bright and are both intellectually challenged.

Saveitnow puts forth an interesting theory, but I dunno. The Blazers were on KXL together with right-wing talk for nearly a decade. If KXL's programming was problematic for the Blazers' advertisers (and I can see how it might be), why was nothing ever done about it until now?

Back to the original topic.

The new morning show is horrible. Dawson is, at best, a secondary player in a medium market. The last thing I want to listen to in the morning is some ultra-ego wannabe, which is how he comes across.

I've switched back to Cowheard for morning drive.

Well, E for effort so far and its only two shows so he must be given more time. Though I quickly get the impression his influences are Rome and Cowherd......and if I wanted to hear them, I can. It is a big improvement over K & K...

To Nitefly:

Lars was resonable until he went up against Limbaugh in the later part of the 90's into the '00s and then he became a jerk.

Paul Allen had already closed the deal to by KXL in 1999 with the plan of making KXL the flag ship station of Blazers.

Tim McNamara thought he was going to eventually be given a greater role in the Paul Allen organization when this happened. When it didn't happen he handed the daily operations over to James Derby. And Derby has gone over to the dark side about as much as you can.

So when the Blazers went down hill and KXL went to the dark side advertizers left the Blazers. But last year the Blazers started getting beter, but the ad revenue hardly spiked due to the relationship with KXL-AM.

So a move had to be made. The better move would have been to muzzle Lars and drop Savage to get the Blazer advertisers to come back.

Instead they went with 99.5 the game. What an absolute jerk Derby is.

Michael Savage and Lars Larson are only an excuse for poor selling, revenue was poor because they didn't understand the community. Selling the naming rights to the Rose Garden for less than a million should of been routine but the Vulcans still haven't got it done. Michael Savage and Lars Larson wouldn't be on the air if they didn't have fans in the business community.

My take on the Dawson vs Cowherd

Dawson is dedicated but blazers all day on the game is must miss radio.

Cowherd's that guy that's all about his career and four hours of that is also too much.

I don't work in radio and am just a listener who likes talk and sports radio. I've lived in many varied markets (10 to be exact) so I've had the chance to listen to some good talk radio.

While I used to like Gavin's show on Saturday's on 1080 the Fan, I've not been impressed so far with his show or the rest of 95.5. Everything seems loud and obnoxious to me - from the guy introducing the station liners to the various hosts (at both the local level and at FOX Sports).

There's too much Blazers talk on Gavin's show and the other local shows. Just because it is a Portland radio station does not mean the local shows do not have to cover national stories (i.e. The Olympics, Favre situations, MLB, etc.). I think the local shows on 95.5, especially Gavin's show, would be better if they had more experts/guests from other media outlets. For example, when Colin's show was local, his "Spanning the Globe" segment had guests from all over the U.S. and still does on his national show to talk about current events. Put a Portland spin on current topics.

In the other cities that I've lived in, the best morning host or afternoon guy was either headed for regional syndication (i.e. Mark Packer in Charlotte) or filled in at the national level (John Kincaid in Atlanta). In listening to Gavin's show, I'm not sure he is at a level where FOX will be calling him to fill-in.

Just my two cents.
