Well, if that CERN supercollider makes time travel possible, as some (dubious) claims have said, it may be possible to go back to the days when Full Service could be heard on 1190 and oldies or even top-40 could be heard on 620 and 910. Of course, the supercollider could destroy the world, too! :-)

Some may laugh, but that's exactly what I'd be doing if I had my hand on a certain DeLorean.

95.5 the game, bad seachickens, mediocre ducks, nba apathy and a commercial real estate crisis will be too much

Alfredo_T,

I heard the CERN supercollider could create a black hole. We already have black holes disguised as morning shows in Portland. If you listen closely, you can hear the sucking sound.

Kevin ...

The Game? Seriously? This might well be the most hyped Blazers season in the last ten years. The Ducks will always be a huge draw, and the football team ain't looking that bad. Live and local much more than the Fan.

If it's the nba than who cares, basketball fans are the weirdest in the major sports and are the pariahs. Basketball isn't mainstream entertainment like football or baseball, the ducks disappear after their second loss and their boosters delusions of a national championship are shattered.

I'm interested if problems in commercial real estate will cause some teams to stumble.

Well seeing as Paul Allen OWNS the Rose Garden, I doubt that commercial real estate will cause the Blazers to stumble. And again, the Blazers are the ONLY GAME IN TOWN. When they were the "pariahs", the Blazers had every reason to be with how the organization was going at the time, from the top down.

Now the Blazers are very credible, and excitement is building again in Stumptown. The Game is in a much better position to deliver the Blazers coverage that is going to be more and more of a commodity than the Fan is.

I worked at the Fan for nine years, and I have a lot of fond memories ... but it is what it is, and in my view it has slipped dramatically over the years. It has less to do honestly with the on-air talent and people at the station as much as it does corporate beancounters sitting in their little cubicle directing traffic from 3000 miles away.

The beneficiary is Paul Allen and The Game, and he has proven that he's not going to run all syndicated stuff to make a buck. His lineup, top to bottom, is live, local and credible. Kenny Vance is a great addition to their NBA coverage, his NBA rolodex is impressive. They have much more to offer than the Fan, who rolls out essentially three hours of live and local daily, with limited access to the Blazers.

I'm still trying to figure out how commercial real estate problems are going to force teams to stumble. These teams are all in leases, many are quite favorable to the franchise, and most of the NBA teams are quite stable. Even with the lousy economy and loss of discretionary income.

There are three types of sports fans, football fan that beats his wife, baseball fan that is beaten by his wife and basketball fan that is too into metaphysics and philosophy to have a wife. Basketball is for the weird and will never be mainstream even in portland where they're the only game in town. If the blazers were such a draw than why around the rose garden is vacant and there are strip clubs near exits away.

There are several nba owners who made their fortunes from real estate and some deal like the new jersey nets were more of a real estate decision than a sport decision and it can effect the league. We've already seen teams let their better players go and have that cap space remain unused.

Not that this has anything to do with the thread title (except that it would probably help an all sports radio station) Portland will not be a "sports" town until it has its own NFL team, and, number two, a major college football program.

An NFL stadium could be used for half of both Oregon and Oregon State home games each season plus the Civil War game.

NFL media revenue adds up to about 60 million a year in places like Seattle and Denver. That would make the sports format all the more attractive here.

Yes Kevin, you have the New Jersey Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers.

They are the minority. The Clippers are also VERY well off financially. Donald Sterling doesn't hide one iota that he cares more about the bottom line than he does winning.

Paul Allen has shown in the past that he cares more about winning, even though for the better part of a decade he went about it the wrong way, and it bit him in the ass. The team was hemmoraging red ink on paper, vastly overpaying players that he wanted to mesh together to bring a title to Portland.

Paul Allen also wants to market that product as much as he can, and what better vehicle to use than his all-sports FM station?! Along with KXL.

The point is this: To say that 95.5 (which just flipped to sports) is going to flip again, before 1080 does, is ludicrous.

Why wouldn't 95.5 flip, the station is without direction and purpose. 95.5 was a better station when it was music and talk belongs on the am.

I would like to see us get a stadium that could house an NFL or a MLB team. One just for NFL could house the Timbers' MLS team as well as the Ducks and Beavers if it were large enough.

The Fan will implode! Isuck and Big Puke will be fired. The Station will go automation with 24/7 ESPN radio until the ratings get so bad that they go Spanish.

I can't wait until the books start to drop so we can be rid of all the talk. The fan is dying on the vine and you can almost sense the fear in posters on this board that work there. They’re the same jokers that kept saying 95.5 would never go sports. Then they were the people saying that 95.5 would never compete with the fan. Now they’re the ones saying that the game will be changing formats less than a year after launch. Looked at any trends? Next you’ll be asking, “who should I send my resume to over at Rose City Radio?”

I agree with you. There are several stations that have talk that don't do well in the ratings that need to try something else. I mean who listens to 1410 anyway? Or 1360?

There IS nothing else! Talk is the only format that can fudge the 55 mark because you can sell more units without driving listeners away.

IIRC, there was a newspaper article a while back that 1410 has more listeners with a $1 million net worth than any other station in Portland.

I thought 1410 played jazz 20 years ago. I remember hearing Pat Pattee on that.
